About the Parks Library Wikipedia editing project Information
The Parks Library Wikipedia editing project began February, 2019.
Vision, Mission, and Strategy
Vision
We seek to enhance the discoverability of digital materials hosted by Iowa State University Parks Library by using the library’s materials to improve the quality, accuracy, and coverage of Wikipedia.
Mission
The purpose of the Wikipedia editing project is to provide services that exceed user expectations by participating in the sharing of knowledge and making library digital materials as accessible and open as possible. Through this project we will support the library’s vision, mission, core values, and its commitment to open access; the university’s mission; the land-grant mission; and the
Wikimedia Foundation’s mission to “empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.”
Strategy
We will pursue this mission by:
Identifying finding aids, digital collections, digital exhibits, and digital repository materials that can be used to enhance existing Wikipedia articles or that can be used, along with other sources, to create new Wikipedia articles on subjects that meet
Wikipedia’s notability guidelines.
Editing Wikipedia articles to improve accuracy, clarity, grammar, structure, and citation as necessary, adding new information citing library digital resources or other resources when such additions are substantive improvements to an article. All edits will be made following the
Wikipedia Manual of Style.
Checking all links we find to library or university resources to ensure they link to active pages and fixing dead links as needed.
