EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working-class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 22nd broadcasted year on 2 January 2006 with its 3075th episode, with Kate Harwood continuing her role as executive producer until Diederick Santer took over on 23 October 2006 (though his first episode was in 2007). EastEnders aired 207 episodes in 2006, with the typical week comprising four half-hour episodes on BBC One, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays.
A new family of characters, the Wickses, were announced to be joining the show in September 2005 as relatives of Pat Evans' ( Pam St. Clement) ex-husband. The family consisted of Kevin Wicks ( Phil Daniels) and his two children, "cocky, charismatic" Deano ( Matt Di Angelo) and "ballsy" Carly ( Kellie Shirley). [1] The show introduced a second all-female family in May 2006, headed by Denise Fox, a love interest for Kevin. The role of Denise was cast to Diane Parish. [2] Denise's children, Chelsea and Libby, were also introduced. Tiana Benjamin and Belinda Owusu were cast in the roles respectively. [3] Lee Ross was cast in the role of Owen Turner, Libby's estranged father who battled alcoholism. Of his casting, Ross said "I'm very happy to be joining EastEnders and I'm looking forward to working alongside the entire cast". [4] Tom Ellis and Natasha Beaumont joined the cast in 2006 as the show's resident GP, Oliver Cousins, and a love interest for Minty Peterson ( Cliff Parisi), SJ Fletcher respectively. Ellis and Beaumont were introduced on four month contracts and both left at the end of their contract. Dave Hill also joined the show's main cast in February 2006 as Bert Atkinson. Bert's grandson, Jay Brown ( Jamie Borthwick), was introduced in December 2006. Stuart Laing made his first appearance as Rob Minter, a love interest for Dawn Swann ( Kara Tointon), in June 2006. [5] Following Oliver Cousins' departure, the show introduced a new GP, May Wright ( Amanda Drew). [6]
The Branning family was expanded in 2006, with the introduction of Jim Branning's ( John Bardon) grandson Bradley Branning, portrayed by Charlie Clements. Clements said he was "very excited to be joining EastEnders and joining such a great family". [7] Jim's son and Bradley's father, Max Branning ( Jake Wood), was introduced in June 2006. Wood said he was "looking forward to joining the Branning family." [8] Max's family was also introduced, with Jo Joyner cast in the role of Max's "smart and outgoing" wife, Tanya Branning. [9] The roles of Max and Tanya's children, Lauren and Abi, were cast to Madeline Duggan and Lorna Fitzgerald respectively. [10] Sean Slater, the brother of Stacey Slater ( Lacey Turner), debuted in August 2006, with the role cast to Robert Kazinsky. [11] Sophie Thompson joined the main cast in September 2006 as Stella Crawford, a love interest for Phil Mitchell ( Steve McFadden). [12] Babita Pohoomull was cast in the role of beauty therapist Preeti Choraria; she made her first appearance on 27 October 2006. [13] Elaine Tan also debuted as Li Chong, a love interest for Mickey Miller ( Joe Swash). Linda Henry joined the cast in 2006 as Shirley Carter, Kevin's ex-wife and the mother of Deano and Carly; her first appearance aired on 5 December 2006. [14]
Following a six-year absence, Phil's son Ben Mitchell was reintroduced, with Charlie Jones taking over the role. Jones said he was "really looking forward to getting started." [8] Following a successful guest stint in October 2005, Ross Kemp reprised his role of Grant Mitchell for a three month stint, between 27 March and 9 June. [15] Grant's daughter, Courtney Mitchell, was also reintroduced to the series following Grant's return, with Megan Jossa taking over the role. Of her casting, she said "I couldn't believe it when I heard I had got the part... it's going to be amazing and I can't wait." [8] Jake Maskall also returned for four episodes as Danny Moon in March 2006. The role of Peter Beale was recast from James Martin to Thomas Law, who began appearing on 31 August 2006. Of his casting, Law said, "I couldn't believe it when I heard that I got the part, I'm really excited as I am a big fan of EastEnders." [16]
It was announced in August 2005 that Letitia Dean would be taking an "extended break" from her role as Sharon Rickman and would return at an unspecified date. [17] Sharon left the series in January 2006, following the death of her husband, to live in America. [18] The show confirmed in June 2006 that Dean would not be reprising the role. [19] Mark Wingett left his role as Mike Swann in March 2006. Kacey Ainsworth announced her decision to leave the series; her character Little Mo Mitchell departed on 26 May 2006 with her son Freddie Mitchell (Alex and Tom Kilby). [20] Show producers axed the characters of Rosie Miller ( Gerry Cowper), Demi Miller ( Shana Swash), Aleesha Miller (Freya and Phoebe Coltman-West) and Juley Smith ( Joseph Kpobie) in 2006; Rosie, Demi and Aleesha departed the series on 7 July 2006 and Juley left on 27 July 2006. [21] Billy Murray quit his role as Johnny Allen, with his character departing on 31 March 2006. [22] His return to the role, for an "explosive autumn storyline", was announced on 5 August 2006. He returned for five episodes in October 2006. [23] Following Murray's decision to quit, his on-screen daughter Louisa Lytton was axed from the series; her character Ruby Allen departed in November 2006. [24] Joel Beckett announced his intentions to leave the series on 7 May 2006; his character Jake Moon departed on 20 October 2006. [25] Wendy Richard quit her role as Pauline Fowler due to "creative differences" between herself and show producers. [26] Richard disagreed with her recent storylines and the character was killed off in a dramatic storyline, which aired on 25 December 2006. [27]
