The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences is a non-profit organization located Brooklyn, New York that was founded in 1843 as the Brooklyn Institute. Today the organization operates as the Brooklyn Museum, but historically the institution founded and managed multiple cultural, education, and scientific institutions in the city of Brooklyn. In addition to the Brooklyn Museum, these included the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory among several others.

Early history as the Brooklyn Institute

The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Science was originally established under the name Brooklyn Institute in 1843. The organization was formed when two prior existing educational and civic institutions merged, the Brooklyn Lyceum (established 1833) and Brooklyn Apprentices' Library (established 1823). While the newly formed organization was the result of a merger, the charter of the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library was officially renewed as the charter for the Brooklyn Institute when the organization was incorporated on April 13, 1843.

Both the Brooklyn Lyceum and Brooklyn Apprentices' Library had previously co-existed in the Brooklyn Lyceum's building since 1841 prior to the merger. The building was located at 182-184 Washington Street at the intersection of Washington and Concord Streets. The Brooklyn Lyceum building continued to be known as the Brooklyn Lyceum until 1845 when it was purchased by philanthropist Augustus Graham. The building was then donated to the two-year old Brooklyn Institute and was re-named after the organization.
