Thomas Glyn Doyle (born 17 October 2001) is an English professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers, on loan from Manchester City.

Early life

Doyle was born on 17 October 2001 in Manchester, England to Scott Doyle and Charlotte Pardoe, children of former Manchester City players Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe respectively. [3]

Club career

Early career

Doyle joined Sandbach United F.C. at the age of four, before joining Manchester City at the age of eight. [4] Tommy turned down a loan move to Preston North End on deadline day in the autumn of 2020 with the intention of fighting for a place in the first team.

Manchester City

Doyle made his professional debut for Manchester City in a 3–1 EFL Cup win over Southampton on 29 October 2019. [5] On 18 September 2020, he extended his contract until 2025. [6]

Hamburger SV (loan)

On 31 August 2021, Doyle joined 2. Bundesliga club Hamburger SV on loan for the 2021–22 season. [7] [8]

Cardiff City (loan)

On 20 January 2022, Doyle joined EFL Championship side Cardiff City on loan until the end of the season. [9] [10] He scored his first goal for the club on 23 February 2022 in a 2–1 loss to Huddersfield Town. [11]

Sheffield United (loan)

On 4 July 2022, Doyle joined Championship side Sheffield United on a season-long loan alongside Manchester City teammate James McAtee. Doyle scored the match winner for the Blades against Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on 19 March 2023, sending the club into the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since 2014. [12] Despite this, alongside McAtee, he was unable to play in the semi-final against his parent club due to FA competition rules forbidding loan players from facing their parent clubs. [13] He finished the season with 38 appearances, four goals and seven assists in all competitions and also won the club's Goal of the Season award for his goal against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. Wolverhampton Wanderers (loan)

On 1 September 2023, Doyle signed for Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan deal. [16] The deal contained an option to buy for a reported £4.3 million with a fifty percent sell on clause on any profit. [17]

Doyle scored his first goal for Wolves in a 1–1 draw with Brentford in the third round of the FA Cup on 5 January 2024. [18]

Fans began chanting "Gimme, gimme, gimme a ginger from City / His name is Tommy Doyle and he plays for the Wolves" (to the tune of the Abba song) in the FA Cup 4th round tie victory over West Bromwich Albion on 28 January 2024.

International career

Doyle was a member of the England under-17 squad that hosted the 2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. [19] He scored a penalty in the opening game against Israel. [20] The following fixture saw him score the winning goal against Italy. [21] A metatarsal injury in the final group match against Switzerland ruled him out of the rest of the tournament. [22] [23]

On 13 October 2020, Doyle captained the England U20s on his debut for the age group during a 2–0 victory over Wales at St. George's Park. [24]

On 27 August 2021, Doyle received his first call up for the England U21s. [25] On 7 September 2021, he made his England U21 debut during the 2-0 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification win over Kosovo U21s at Stadium MK. [26]

On 14 June 2023, Doyle was included in the England squad for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. [27] [28] He came off the bench as a late substitute in the final as England defeated Spain to win the tournament. [29] [30]

Personal life

Doyle's paternal grandfather Mike Doyle and maternal grandfather Glyn Pardoe, were former professional footballers and long-time teammates at Manchester City. [31] Both men played in the 1974 League Cup Final against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club at which their grandson Tommy Doyle is currently on loan (Wolves won that game 2–1 to lift the League Cup for the first time.)
