Naming

Who decided which supermarkets were "value" and "The Big four"? Is there any evidence, or is this a POV attack? Lofty 09:22, 1 August 2006 (UTC) reply

I agree up to a point, I'd say "value" and "convenience" are difficult to justify, value particularly but with the movement, particularly of Tesco and Sainsbury's into convienience that becomes harder to define too. I'd say that "The Big Four" is pretty well established, but in the end it doesnt really add much, so here is a go at a new version. Ian3055 20:45, 1 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Home Bargains

Regional chains and convenience stores

All of the 'convinience' stores are pretty minor, perhaps with the exception of 'SPAR' and 'Londis'. Where is the justification for including companies like 'Scotmid', 'Budgens' and 'Nisa Today' which most people have never heard of, and tend to be very regional in operation? 84.69.221.186 ( talk) 16:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC) reply

  • The title of UK supermarkets does not exclude regional chains. Scotmid and Budgens are much bigger than Booths, but equally regional. Lets decide whether or not to include regional chains. -- Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) ( Talk) 12:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC) reply
  • I advocate removing Scotmid, as it is covered by The Co-operative brand under major chains. Add Booths.
  • The big convenience store chains are hugely significant. Nisa-Today's turns over 7 billion pounds and is twice the size of SPAR, by number of stores(though that includes Costcutter.) The topic is all the more significant as majors like Tesco are aggressively following the co-operatives into the convenience store market. I can't tell the difference between a convenience store and a supermartket, though some in the industry make the distinction. We should keep them.
  • I propose a rule of thumb: if a supermarket is notable enough to have a Wikipedia article, it is notable enough to be in this template.

I like your logic, but I wonder if we should add the other 20-odd independent regional co-ops, or at least the eight that have their own articles. My instinct is that it won't be helpful to readers, and we should remove Scotmid too (it gets a link in the lead of The Co-operative Food): but perhaps I am biased, because I made their own nav box: {{ UK consumer co-ops}}. -- Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) ( Talk) 15:16, 13 November 2008 (UTC) reply

Defunct group

There have been numerous mergers, name changes and liquidations in the UK grocery trade.
