On 14 December 2021, a press release was issued in South African by a financial services organisation and health insurance administrator. The press release mentioned analysis of the Omicron outbreak, stating: "Approximately 78 000 of these COVID-19 test results were attributed to Omicron infections over the period 15 November 2021 to 7 December 2021." [1] However, there appears to have been some interpretation issues over the numbers of Omicron cases in South Africa. The Washington Post are reporting that "Later information provided by a Discovery Health spokeswoman put the number of total cases at 78,173, of which 19,070 tests were positive during the "omicron period" from Nov. 15 to Dec. 7." [1] So I have updated South Africa, Col. 3 (other sources) to 19,070, but if anyone thinks this is not specific enough to put such a large figure down, then my edits for this should be reverted. - Not done: there are 5 columns already (although to be fair I think there were only 4 when this request was made) and adding further columns for fatalities and recoveries would be quite arduous on editors who would need to update all the figures in the columns manually. Also, adding such columns would not be in keeping with the format of the statistics tables of the other main variants.

The table entries need to be sorted. New Zealand, for example, should be higher up the list than it is now. I would do it myself, but I don't know what the sort key is. Is it the sum of the three "confirmed cases" figures? — Bruce1ee talk 14:03, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think this table was ever intended to be in some sort of strict order because it's a "Wikitable sortable" chart, so each column can be reorganised instantly by clicking the up and down arrows in the respective column-header cells. I am not sure that this is visible on a smartphone though. Over the past weeks, there have been various efforts to sort the columns by descending order, but this has become nigh on impossible now, with there being four competing columns of statistics. I would be cautious about expending too much energy on trying to order the table. SpookiePuppy ( talk) 14:31, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- Since all columns are sortable, I think the most useful sorting would be by the greatest number of confirmed cases. But that's not obvious and can cause confusion. Looking at the statistics for Delta, the order tends to get lost after a while. If I had to pick a column as a simple key, I'd pick the case count of "other sources" at the moment because it is the greatest case count in over two-thirds of the rows. Later in the future, when the spread starts to slow down, it may make sense to sort by country name. -- Fernando Trebien ( talk) 18:28, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

I disagree with that last comment, since the UK and South Africa have only 600 thousand and 19 thousand cases respoctively, so i don't see why we can't include the suspected cases in a list of the highest totals. I'd suggest a table with the highest numbers, and then the regular chart as it exists. It's a nightmare to sort through the GISAID numbers to compare with the others, and the very few countries with suspected cases that, eventually should disappear, as updated numbers and testing goes on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.31.165.138 ( talk) 03:33, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
MeekMark: Highest amount of cases total would be misleading Again, I disagree. I think people are fully capable of knowing Denmark is a tiny tiny country, and the United States and Germany are huge countries. It simply makes sense to sort the numbers by the highest number of cases. Honestly, people don't care to see GISAID and PANGOLIN and how they need to play catch up, which is all those multiple tables show.
I would create a chart with the largest amount of cases, or largest amount of confirmed and suspected cases. And then one follow that with the secondary table like we have now, which is far from being the most useful for the majority of users.

This is a misleading and ridiculous section. It was always behind reality but now it's so far behind reality that it's actually misleading to anyone reading it. for example Ireland has has more cases of COVID in the last week tham in all of 2020 and yet the confirmed and suspected cases of Omicron is in the low hundreds. - Not done for now: The numbers for variants are much lower than the actual number: the reason for that is that most countries don't detect if someone has a variant or not. Based on what you said, Ireland is probably not sequencing cases well which makes the number of "Detected" Omicron cases low.

Data still shows that the Delta variant has much more new cases than the Omicron variant, which is not true anymore as according to the CDC and coronavirus news reports. Hi Crannofonix. As of November 2022, the column headers dates ( as of...) are inaccurate by now- it is most obvious in the other sources column, where most figures are from 2021 or early 2022.
