A problem of geography

To all interested in this template, welcome.

And what a welcome template it is! But it has occurred to this New Yorker that Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare is not in Manhattan at all. Delighted as I may be with the notion of a separate such list for each borough, one wonders whether changing the title of the template to "Restaurants in the City of New York" might not serve our purposes better. Upon such a change, naturally we must add Neir's Tavern to the list. Let me know what you think! Twozenhauer ( talk) 08:17, 29 May 2023 (UTC) reply

I agree that changing the name of the template to "Restaurants in Manhattan" would be more appropriate as the current title implies that this list encompasses the other New York City borough. There is already another template called " Restaurants in Brooklyn". Transpoman ( talk) 19:42, 16 August 2023 (UTC) reply
Perhaps we should fork out separate templates for each borough? --- Another Believer ( Talk) 00:37, 17 August 2023 (UTC) reply
I misread the original comment. Upon closer investigation it looks like separate templates for three different NYC boroughs had already been forked out in December 2022:
The template for Manhattan was subsequently renamed to Template:Restaurants in the City of New York in June 2023 so it would be a matter of changing the name of the template back to what it originally was.
On a separate note, there are lots of Wiki articles for restaurants in Manhattan so a Manhattan template would probably need to have additional subcategories to help sort through what's listed under "Current" and "Defunct", such as by cuisine or neighborhood. Support forking, as a single template for all NYC restaurants will be far too large. --- Another Believer ( Talk) 15:21, 17 August 2023 (UTC) reply

A bit unwieldy

Imo needs to be sorted and potentially have the defunct restaurant section removed. toobigtokale ( talk) 21:29, 13 October 2023 (UTC) reply

I would suggest adding subcategories to "Current" and "Defunct" to make the list more organized. I didn't really see examples of this in the templates for restaurants in other cities/locations, but perhaps Manhattan is the only location that that currently has a very large number of restaurants with Wiki articles. An exception I saw was the template for Hong Kong restauarants, which is broken out by cuisine. For a list of restaurants in Manhattan, I think it would be easiest to break them out by geography - maybe something like:
  • South of Canal Street
  • Canal–Houston Streets
  • Houston–14th Streets
  • 14th–34th Streets
  • 34th–42nd Streets
  • 42nd–59th Streets
  • 59th–110th Streets
  • North of 110th Street
How does something like this sound? The subcategories used for the geographies could always be refined at a later date if more or less detail is desired, but I think something like this could be good enough as a start. Transpoman ( talk) 11:57, 4 April 2024 (UTC) reply
