private/public

A list of private schools really doesn't belong on a template entitled "Hillsborough County Public Schools". Either the name should be changed or the those schools should be moved to their own category. Any suggestions? Zeng8r ( talk) 03:47, 22 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Changed.-- Jorfer ( talk) 04:03, 22 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Much better. :) Zeng8r ( talk) 12:44, 22 March 2008 (UTC) reply

This change opened up the template to any school in the county. That's fine, imo, but it means that EVERY elementary/private/charter/whatever school should be included. The list is incomplete right now. It shouldn't be difficult to fill in all the missing public schools, and smaller private schools will probably be added by people with knowledge of them. Zeng8r ( talk) 12:50, 4 November 2008 (UTC) reply

LOTS of schools are still missing, especially on the elementary level. I might be able to fill some in over the next few days, but if anybody has time and would like to jump in, please do... 15:24, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

school sizes

Also, the number of students in various schools doesn't belong on the template. Mentioning the numbers in the individual school articles is adequate, imo. I'll remove in a couple days unless somebody has another idea. -- Zeng8r ( talk) 03:50, 22 March 2008 (UTC) reply

It is arranged by size. You could arrange it alphabetically, but this makes it more interesting.-- Jorfer ( talk) 04:03, 22 March 2008 (UTC) reply

The problem is that these numbers are extremely fluid. If some kid left the Wharton district yesterday morning, for example, the template technically should have to be updated to reflect the change... until a family moves in later in the afternoon, necessitating another update. Even if you just change the stats yearly, somebody has to remember to look them all up and actually fix the numbers.

Templates like this are just supposed to direct users to related articles. Adding stats isn't necessary, especially stats that aren't static. Just my opinion... Zeng8r ( talk) 12:44, 22 March 2008 (UTC) reply

These stats do reflect approximate size (not exact size) thus helping user and editors to zero in on important articles. The numbers here should be added to schools without enrollment figures on their pages since not all do. In the mean time this should stay as is. We can decide on the arrangement later. For now the figure are up to date with the sources being used.-- Jorfer ( talk) 04:41, 23 March 2008 (UTC) reply

Here are the first schools listed at the top of the template:

Gaither High School - 2,790 students · Henry B. Plant High School - 2,711 students · Paul R. Wharton High School - 2,612 students

Those are not "approximate stats", and neither are a majority of the enrollment counts mentioned for other schools that list one. Actually, my mother-in-law works in the King HS ("2182 students") registrar's office and I'll see her today. If that number is accurate as of Monday, I'll owe you a Cuban sandwich. Zeng8r ( talk) 13:13, 23 March 2008 (UTC) reply

  • The school enrollment counts had not been updated in months and were undoubtedly inaccurate, so I went ahead and removed them. It's simply too impractical to keep them in the template, especially with such precise numbers. That information should be included in the individual school's articles but it just doesn't make sense to try to keep them updated and accurate here. Zeng8r ( talk) 19:50, 27 October 2008 (UTC) reply
  • I rearranged the high schools to be in alphabetical order. Since the number of students is no longer shown in the template, someone who looks at a page with the template on it would not even know why the schools are listed in the particular order without going to the template page. Furthermore, it seems more likely that readers will want to go from one school article to another knowing the names of the schools, as opposed to knowing their relevant relative size. It's much easier to scan through an alphabetical list to find a known item than to scan through a list organized by some other principle. I support having the enrollment data in Wikipedia, but it would be better to place that in a table in Hillsborough County Public Schools, so that people who want to see the schools listed by size can sort the table accordingly. -- Metropolitan90 (talk) 07:00, 18 September 2009 (UTC) reply

Good idea! If you're looking for more to do on this template, I notice that many schools are missing from the list... Zeng8r ( talk) 13:16, 18 September 2009 (UTC) reply
