Updating the systematics.
I updated the systematics of extant species of family Echimyidae (Spiny rats), including Myocastoridae (Coypus) and Capromyidae (Hutias), to incorporate information collected from cladistic approaches applied to morphological characters (showing that many traits used to define taxa were plesiomorphic or homoplastic), and from phylogenetic analyses of DNA and protein sequence data.
