Please remove the flag icon from this template. Mississippi officially does not have a state flag effective immediately.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 22:07, 30 June 2020 (UTC) reply

Support - endorsed by me. Flag is no longer in use. IWI ( chat) 23:19, 30 June 2020 (UTC) reply
Support. What about replacing it with the Bicentennial Flag (either directly or as an additional flag-var) since it's being used as a de facto placeholder flag in some contexts. – Illegitimate Barrister ( talkcontribs), 08:36, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply
Just to be clear, the previous years' flags should still remain in this template for explicit usage. Note that there are many templates still using this, without additional parameters, so they would first need to be adjusted to either have the flag removed, or explicitly stated to use the 2001 version, depending on which is more applicable for that context, before this change should be made.
If people wish to remove the flag from articles like 1970 United States Census a wider discussion should take place. I'd imagine pre-2020 historical articles should retain the flag at the time, but either way, that discussion would need to take place outside this venue. ProcrastinatingReader ( talk) 13:26, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply
I am deactivating this edit request, since historical uses of the flag are likely still valid, as they are with most (or all?) historical flags. If a consensus discussion leads to a new proposed change, use a new edit request template or reactivate this one. – Jonesey95 ( talk) 13:35, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply
@ Jonesey95: But this template displays it as if it is the current flag wherever it is transcluded. Mississippi currently has no flag, per state law. IWI ( chat) 15:55, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply
I agree that some instances of the flag as displayed in some articles are currently inappropriate. Have a discussion to determine which pages should stop displaying the flag, and make a proposal about how to stop displaying the flag in those locations. The discussion might include a look at the usage of File:Flag_of_Mississippi.svg, which might benefit from a move or a rename. – Jonesey95 ( talk) 16:33, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply
We could go to the articles that use the default flagalias as currently constituted and then convert those historical uses to {{Flag|Mississippi|2001}}, paving the way for us to safely take off the default flag here, that way it will still display for pre-2020 uses. – Illegitimate Barrister ( talkcontribs), 21:41, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply

The state of Mississippi no longer has unofficial flag, so it should be removed from the box and anywhere else the flag is used, preferably at the source for the flag icons. 17.207.208.60 ( talk) 22:41, 1 July 2020 (UTC) reply

  • Alternative—Change | flag alias = Flag of Mississippi.svg to | flag alias-2020 = Flag of Mississippi.svg. Do a google search that this happened. {{ reply to| Can I Log In}}'s  talk page! 00:48, 2 July 2020 (UTC) reply
No, that's the same as flag alias-2001. I'm thinking perhaps this should be resolved by overwriting commons:File:Flag of Mississippi.svg with a placeholder. I wonder if there's a precedent of a situation like this. Nardog ( talk) 01:00, 2 July 2020 (UTC) reply
Well, we gotta make it "historical" and preserve its data. My alternative request or otherwise somehow emptying |flag alias=. {{ reply to| Can I Log In}}'s  talk page! 01:09, 2 July 2020 (UTC) reply
Done: Historical uses between 2001 and June 2020 should now be replaced by {{flag|Mississippi|2001}} etc., see #Template-protected edit request on 30 June 2020 above. Nardog ( talk) 01:08, 2 July 2020 (UTC) reply

No, it's not clear at all; you didn't say where to add it or why it's necessary. Please be more specific when requesting edits in the future.

Template-protected edit request on 9 November 2020

Replace with the new approved flag: File:Flag of Mississippi ("New Magnolia Flag").svg. As was pointed out in Talk:Flag of Mississippi#Effective date?, the pending approval from the legislature is unnecessary, as the approval is not to approve the flag as official but to accept the referendum, and the legislature is required to abide by the result of the referendum anyways. Additionally, this new flag is already being used in various official contexts. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 00:16, 9 November 2020 (UTC) reply

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{ edit template-protected}} template. Bring reliable sources that state that the new flag is officially the state flag. – Jonesey95 ( talk) 04:22, 9 November 2020 (UTC) reply
Isn't this type of situation usually dealt with by overwriting Flag_of_XYZ.svg rather than using a different filename? I don't know how that's supposed to gel with c:COM:OVERWRITE but it seems to be the way as far as I've seen. Nardog ( talk) 05:00, 9 November 2020 (UTC) reply

Template-protected edit request on 16 December 2020

I would like file to be updated in-line with the file that is being used throughout the rest of the English Language Wikipedia.

Consensus was established on Talk:Mississippi and the flag appears in the main article as well as in the article Flag of Mississippi. There is no question as to whether this is the flag currently flying above the capital.

Let's stop acting as though this hasn't been decided and go ahead and make the change in-line with the consensus that has been established elsewhere. 107.207.242.249 ( talk) 20:12, 16 December 2020 (UTC) reply

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. The source you provided shows the flag flying above the Old State Capitol Museum and does not appear to mention the capitol. The article for the flag says that it is pending approval by the legislature, so icons showing information about present-day Mississippi should reflect the actual fact that the state has no official flag. Patience. The legislature will meet soon. – Jonesey95 ( talk) 15:53, 17 December 2020 (UTC) reply
I agree, this is silly to have only the article Flag of Mississippi showing the pending flag, and it is pedantic to insist that the templates that refer to the same flag showing a blank which messes up formatting. The Associated Press (via LA Times) has said The magnolia-centered banner chosen Wednesday by the Mississippi State Flag Commission flies outside the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson, Miss. The design will go on the November ballot and if approved, will become the new Mississippi flag. [1] It was approved [2]. Done deal. The consensus you asked User:Jjj1238 for is essentially complete via the changing of the main flag article. - Bri.public ( talk) 19:54, 4 January 2021 (UTC) reply
Please provide a source stating that the new flag design has been enacted into law. The legislation dictating the process is linked from the lead of the flag article; here's the relevant passage: "If a majority of the qualified electors voting on the question in the special election vote "Yes," then the Legislature shall enact into law the new design as the official Mississippi State Flag during the next regular session of the Legislature after the election." As far as I can tell, the Mississippi legislature opens its session on 5 January, so this should be resolved pretty quickly. – Jonesey95 ( talk) 22:03, 4 January 2021 (UTC) reply
State house and senate have approved the change as of yesterday [3] - Bri.public ( talk) 20:52, 7 January 2021 (UTC) reply

It's now finally been done; the governor has now OFFICIALLY signed the flag into law. (There was a signing ceremony and everything!) It has now become the 100% OFFICIAL state flag, so we can finally update this template! @ Jonesey95: Any way you or anybody else can update it to replace " File:Flag placeholder.svg" with the current File:Flag of Mississippi.svg, now that it's 100% OFFICIAL?
