In the template title "Aircraft" is piped to
Fixed wing aircraft which raises the question of which it should be ? i.e. should it be "Aircraft" and include rotorcraft-specific components (e.g.
Tail rotor) and the pipe be removed (my preference) ? or should the title be changed to refer to "fixed-wing" ? or is there a good reason for a pipe here ?

It's a good point. I created the template and I think my intention was to create another one for rotorcraft (also realising that helis are also 'aircraft'). That could still be done. The template was created from the more relevant articles in the category of aircraft components, there is not a helicopter component category so that's probably why it didn't happen. I could look at it but I don't think we have many heli component or system articles (it might be helpful to list them here or create a new category). Cheers

A separate template for rotorcraft would duplicate a lot of this template as many of the components either are (e.g. most avionics) or conceivably could be (e.g. drop tank) used by helicopters. Given that the template is just one of many ways of navigating between articles I'd prefer the easier option of adding the obvious rotorcraft components to this template. That also avoids having an ugly title such as "Fixed-wing aircraft systems and components".

There are a lot of things here that don't apply to rotorcraft, if we add links to all related rotorcraft articles then it would be much longer than it is already is. Let's give time for others to comment/suggest.

this should probably include engines
seems like an oversight
