Sambisari is a 9th-century
Hindu temple located about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) east of
Yogyakarta, near
Adisucipto International Airport. The temple was discovered in 1966, buried approximately 5 metres (16 ft) underground; it is thought to have been covered by volcanic ash from
Mount Merapi. Parts of the original temple have been excavated.Photograph:
