I'd add "hibernating" before "site" in the hook, or make the second bit a more subordinate clause - can be reworded so there is only one. Otherwise age, size and hook cited. I can't see the book on google books, accepted in good faith.

Its a real, paper book. How about:
ALT1 ... that the Balkan whip snake hibernates in winter, with several snakes sometimes sharing a single site?
