Separate articles for York and City of York?

WP:UKDISTRICTS gives guidance on when districts which are also settlements have separate articles. It says "In most cases two articles are used. The district takes the form as outlined above and the settlement takes the name according to normal naming conventions. Single articles are generally created where the settlement/district matches most of the following criteria:..." York does not seem to meet any of the listed criteria (except passibly number 6), but we have a single article for both the settlement York and the district City of York.

There were separate artcles until March 2004. As far as I can see they were merged after a very short discussion between only two users here.

Any views on whether we should recreate a separate article for the district, in line with other cases where the district covers a significantly larger area than the settlement? Mhockey ( talk) 21:41, 15 July 2022 (UTC) reply

  • Strong support, I suggest you go ahead as I doubt this will receive a huge amount more attention by now

Why is ethnicity important?

What does "white" include/exclude? Also, the number is old.

Suggest to delete this piece of information as the purpose is highly dubious. 77.18.59.11 ( talk) 07:45, 28 July 2022 (UTC) reply

Split of the district and city article

I have split these two articles because the two of them don't work together. Like the City of Doncaster and City of Wakefield articles. The York district covers an area bigger than the city but there were no mentions of the settlements in the city article. So with grounds and parishes among other things. The articles are in good stead of being split into two. Anyone who objects, please discuss here and on the other article talk page. DragonofBatley ( talk) 20:27, 19 November 2022 (UTC) reply

Thanks, there was already a consensus for this above and at other places. Crouch, Swale ( talk) 21:55, 19 November 2022 (UTC) reply

Population of York

There are inconsistencies in the population data presented in this article. The 141685 figure is a lowering of the previous figure of around 156000, but the city's area and density were not changed and thus not adjusted in line with the population. Furthermore, the criteria used for such a low figure is unclear. The only evidence for how that figure was arrived at that I can find is on this German website: https://citypopulation.de/en/uk/yorkshireandthehumber/york/E63000615__york/ This site indicates that the boundaries used to restrict the population to 141685 exclude significant chunks of the contiguous urban built up area of the city, particularly the area around Huntington. There is no geographical reason to exclude that part of the city and certain others. The Huntington area also includes the Monks Cross shopping centre and the York Community Stadium, both pictured in the article. They shouldn't be pictured if they are not to be regarded as part of the settlement of York. Another inconsistency. Schmegelian ( talk) 00:19, 16 January 2024 (UTC) reply
