Why is the map not the official metro map?

Shouldn’t the picture in the article that is labeled system map be the official metro map that is used by WMATA? 2600:4040:B67A:CD00:E875:AC66:9150:A63C ( talk) 22:30, 9 July 2023 (UTC) reply

That might be ideal, but the official map is copyrighted, non-free content. Under the non-free content guideline, non-free content can only be used on Wikipedia when a stringent set of criteria are met. Specifically, use of the official map would not meet criterion 1 ("No free equivalent"), since a free equivalent for the map has been created. We use that free equivalent instead, since it serves the same purpose while also allowing free reuse under a Creative Commons license. PlanetJuice ( talkcontribs) 23:02, 9 July 2023 (UTC) reply
It is illegal to use official transit maps in transit articles on Wikipedia becuz they are copyrighted. For example: In the articles Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore)#Network and infrastructure, you will see fan-made system maps and not the official ones.
