what's the etymology of Tarnovo ? -- Criztu 29 June 2005 15:31 (UTC)
How did tarnovo get veliko when this is serbo-croatian, not bulgarian?
According to some Bulgarian philologists the word Tarnovo came from Vlach/Romanian TURNU, meaning tower. It was an old strongpoint here before Bulgars invasion
Veliko means "Great" as in Veliko Britania for Great Britain. Tarnovo has its origins in Thorn. It is illegal to transliterate it as Turnovo. ( talk) 18:50, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Veliko Tarnovo - Varosha quarter.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on May 1, 2013. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2013-05-01. Other origin of Tarnovo may be from Vlach/Romanian word Turnu, where "Turnu" means tower and later was transformed in Tarnovo. Romanians and Aromanians lived and sill live in Bulgaria and their influence was stronger during the apparition of Tarnovo fortress.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.124.182.46 ( talk • contribs)
