Like Texas High School Football, Texas High School Band and Band Competitions are particularly competitive. Public School extra-curricular activities, which includes marching band, are goverened by the University Interscholastic League, or UIL. UIL holds a series of contests every fall in order to determine the state champion for High School Marching Bands. The state is divided up into 5 categories for high schools, 1A to 5A. 1A, 2A, and 4A have the UIL State marching contest on odd numbered years, 3A and 5A have it on even numbered years. This process is very rigorous and extremely tough to break through. As every year passes in Texas, more and more High School bands get very good, so the standards of excellence keeps getting pushed higher and higher. The 5A state marching contest is so competitive, that the last two times it has been held (02 and 04) the previous year's 4A state champion (Cedar Park and Richland) did not even qualify for the 5A state marching contest (for which they had each become eligible).

The UIL is a national model for its music competition:

Ensemble events:
- wind band (marching concert/sightreading
- male/female/mixed chorus (concert/sightreading)
- string/full orchestra (concert/sightreading)

plus solo and ensemble competition for individual/small groups of all of the above. For large ensembles, state champions are crowned similar to other UIL activities (though, for some reason, band only gets state champions in each classification every other year). Solo and ensemble has both a regional and state level with outstanding soloists being honored at the state level in addition to the usual adjudication for ratings.

The annual One Act Play competition is one of the most challenging ones that the UIL offers. It is also the oldest known high school theatre contest. I have overhauled my previous statement. I am in the process of trying to update the Texas UIL High School Athletic Regions to take into account of the recent 2016-2018 Reclassification and Alignment. It is also taking into account of the Conference 6A that has yet to be added. Anyone is free to help me update this massive template. Template:Texas UIL High School Athletic Regions I am also creating a new template for Texas UIL TMEA ATSSB High School Music Regions similar to the Athletic Regions because music is the only UIL Division has their own Regions Alignment and Reclassification because the duties are shared jointly by UIL, TMEA, and ATSSB. All three share the same music regions but all three have separate areas for marching band and all-state. It will take some time for me to work on them.
