Interpretation

The article states:

The next day, the missing plane was sighted by Minneapolis and recovered by San Francisco. It had landed on the water, but had been unable to communicate. The pilot, Lt. J. A. Thomas, and the radioman, RMS 0. J. Gannan, had headed for Australia, sailing the plane backwards as it tended to head into the prevailing east wind. In five days and 21 hours, they had covered approximately 385 miles on a course within 5'/r of that intended.

Were they headed for Australia, the continent? The use of italics is ambiguous here. Also what does "5'/r" mean? -- Yath 00:21, 24 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Cleanup

Could this article use some sort of sections system, or maybe a timeline of some sort? It is very long and could use some better organization. I don't know how one would go about making this a timeline sort of thing, but that would be my approach. J. Finkelstein 21:41, 8 March 200

"Attack" on Atlanta

I'm very interested in the statements about SF shooting at Atlanta, and I'm wondering where I can find the full story. Several books are listed as references here that I have not read, and the lack of inline citations makes it impossible to know which one(s) contain the story. I checked the Atlanta page, and the same story is there, with additional detail (19 hits), and the only reference for the entire page is DANFS. Checked that, and sure enough, the same material is there, but of course without citations. Then I checked the San Francisco DANFS entry and it mentions targeting a small cruiser about that time, but does not mention hitting Atlanta. This sounds a lot like Morison's account, which talks about hitting the Atlanta as a possibility, based on the admiral ceasing fire for unexplained reasons, a footnoted account about the dye, and a statement by someone else that the Atlanta may have not targeted but merely in the way while San Francisco was shooting at something else. Maybe there are other cases of friendly fire just as or more horrific than this one, but this one strikes me as pretty significant and I'd like to know more about it. CL/CA-38

If CL is correct, should be explained. I would delete "CL/". 151.29.138.86 ( talk) 22:12, 5 December 2023 (UTC) reply
