"Trojans" was adopted in 1912. Nickname(s) in earlier seasons are more contested.

• USC's position is "Up to that time, teams from USC were called the Methodists or Wesleyans and neither nickname was looked upon with favor by university officials." and "The first USC football squad is formed in 1888. Before being nicknamed the Trojans in 1912, they are known variously as the USC Cardinals and as the Methodists.".
• LA Times includes "HENRY H. GODDARD and FRANK H. SUFFEL (1888, 2-0)--They began USC football, organizing the Methodists--later to be the Trojan..."

May I suggest football recruiters for SC look at Brent Venables comment today on espn college football recruiting why he elects not to poach football recruits of Clemson even though he was the lead recruiter on many of them. It’s very clear his feelings and most would say it’s about ethics here in recruiting young men and doing it the right and correct way.
