Culture & Attractions section

Although most of the information here is useful and should be retained, I don't like the format. It looks too much like a list of miscellany.

I've made some edits and added a little more info about the 1936 tornado, including new sources. I'm not sure this bit shouldn't be moved to the "History" section of the article, but I'll leave it where it is for now since it certainly did have an impact on the city's culture, much like Katrina had on New Orleans. Anyone else have thoughts about this?

Should this entire section be re-written, at least slightly, to conform to a more text-book like discussion of the city's culture and attractions instead of a "fun facts" format? Berberry ( talk) 14:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC) reply

I waited a few days and nobody raised any objections, so I moved the paragraph about the tornado to the history section. This article reads like it was written by the Tupelo Chamber of Commerce.

12-September-2006: The text includes much more than either the City of Tupelo or the Visitor's Bureau webpages, but there are a lot of events needing sources with citations. I have added about 10 citation footnote references, but there are many more needed. Overall, it is a remarkable amount of information, just needs many sources. Elvis was born in East Tupelo according to his biography "Last train to Mempis"

My grandfather was wounded in the battle here. He never mentioned in his letters the name "Tupelo" It was known to him as the "Battle of Harrisburg". The monument in the park recognizes this in parentheses under "Battle of Tupelo". Apparently my grandfather had never heard of Tupelo because it did not exist. Oh--And he got his revenge. Tupelo was hit by a terrible tornado the day I was born on April 5, 1936.

Read through the bit about the history of the place briefly, didn't notice any source about the name. In the book "Elvis" by Jerry Hopkins, the history of the name of the town is different from the article here; I quote from the book (p. 15): "The new town was called Gum Pond and then Tupelo, from the Chickasaw word topala, meaning "lodging place"." ...didn't bother changing it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.208.183.44 ( talk) 18:34, 2 January 2010 (UTC) reply

American Family Association (AFA)

Tupelo is the location of the AFA headquarters. It's an organization that promotes conservative Christian values and works against the "homosexual agenda" and what it perceives as a liberal bias in the main stream media. They're known for boycotting major corporations such as McDonald's, Pepsi and Coca-Cola for advancing the "gay agenda". There are numerous small and non-notable businesses mentioned in the article, I think AFA would fit in since their WP article says they have 200 radio affiliates. I'd rather not stir that pot but I think it would make it less of a peacock page. Geogene ( talk) 00:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC) reply

Severe weather

The strongest tornado to hit the Tupelo area since 1950 was an F4 in Shannon on April 29, 1963. I don't see how this would be relevant however, so I won't include it in the article.-- Kevjgav ( talk) 04:03, 20 January 2015 (UTC) reply

I am currently working on a better version to include information on Tupelo Christian Preparatory School. I think it is notable to mention TCPS since it is located nearly in Tupelo and has Tupelo in the school name.
