"Tsenacommacah" is slightly more popular than "Tenakomakah" on Google, and the former is the only spelling that gets any hits on Google books or Google scholar. While this article is new, shall it be moved to Tsenacommacah? Melchoir 21:18, 26 June 2006 (UTC) reply

The form Ts- comes from William Strachey. who gave the word as a translation of "Virginia" on his word list. I have seen a photocopy of the original handwritten manuscript, and his writing is often hard to make out, especially the second letter S, but that is what is seems to be. (it also looks a little like an A)...

Meanwhile, another attestation is the original engraved Pocahontas and Powhatan portraits, where it reads "Virginia als Attanoughkomouck" ...

A third spelling is seen in the name of the modern day Pamunkey newsletter: Attan-Akamik.

A fact from Tsenacommacah appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 30 June 2006. The text of the entry was as follows: Did you know... that Tsenacommacah was the name of the territory in eastern Virginia which was controlled by the Powhatan Confederacy at the time of the arrival of English colonists at Jamestown in 1607? I find the map a bit zoomed in. Too much detail. Perhaps we could find one showing the territory of the Powhatan territory from the vantage point of the Moon or from beyond the orbit of Jupiter? LastDodo ( talk) 12:53, 8 November 2023 (UTC) reply
