Big Apple-centrism

It's debatable whether this really is the primary usage of this term in global English. Certainly in New York English it is, but I'm not sure it would apply across the board even in American English. Similarly the lede line on the disambiguation page is uncited; citations are not needed for dab pages so I'll take this up on that page's talkpage. Is "The Narrows" singular or plural?

The article is inconsistent about whether "The Narrows" is singular or plural:

"The Narrows is the strait separating Brooklyn from Staten Island."

"The Narrows were formed after deposition of the Harbor Hill Moraine."

My opinion is that it should be consistent. It's also my opinion that it should be singular. Before I make a pass through and change all the "The Narrows are. . . " to "The Narrows is. . .", I'll post this and see what folks think. TypoBoy ( talk) 00:47, 19 September 2014 (UTC)! reply

After a month, there are no objections. Either everybody agrees with me or not everybody has read this section. Though it's probably the latter, I do think the article should be consistent in treating The Narrows as either a singular or a plural noun. And I think that, because The Narrows is one thing (a strait), it should be singular. I intend to make this change. TypoBoy ( talk) 23:50, 22 October 2014 (UTC) reply

After all that, there was only one sentence with "The Narrows" as its subject and a plural verb. I changed it. TypoBoy ( talk) 23:54, 22 October 2014 (UTC) reply
