Musical?
A few editors have been adding musical as a genre in the first sentence. I disagree that this film is a musical; if consensus develops against my opinion, I then suggest that it shouldn't belong in the first sentence. I am primarily relying on the policy
WP:FILMLEAD.
FILMLEAD states that "Genre classifications should comply with
WP:WEIGHT and represent what is specified by a majority of mainstream reliable sources." I am not well-informed on what sources are reliable when it comes to film, but I started with the top reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. First, I should say that RT itself does label this film a musical. However, of the first eight top reviews, only one describes Tarzan as a musical. Four of the sources specifically mention how the movie breaks away from Disney/broadway style musicals.
ReelViews: "animated", also says "the Magic Kingdom has produced a non-musical animated film" and mentions songs in the film but that they're not "integrated into the plot"
Roger Ebert: "Family, Drama, Animation, Adventure"
Most surprising are the songs by Phil Collins. Unlike the usual Disney sing-alongs, the rock drummer's music is used primarily as an effective bridge between sequences. Only once does the movie stop for one of those cute show-tune set-pieces, and it seems out of place amid the otherwise propulsive jungle drumbeats.
Other evidence: one source currently in the article (
Animated Views in which the director is interviewed. It seems that maybe he and the reviewer are discussing Tarzan as a musical, but they are also mentioning ways in which it differs from musicals.
Screen Rant calls it a non-musical.
Chicago Tribune wrote a piece during production that details how the Disney execs and producers deliberately were trying to depart from the musical genre.
I am open to good-faith debate about this (mostly trivial) matter, but I believe the burden is on whoever adds "musical" to the article to justify that it is described often enough as such to belong in this article.

I agree. You are following the rules and even making the extra effort to start a discussion, (with research too) which is what the other editor should have done.

Plot rewrite
Sjones23 can you explain why you restored the original?
Banedon (

Hey, there. I restored the previous plot summary as per
WP:BRD rather than risk a potential
edit war. I'm also concerned about the potential scene-by-scene recaps, which should be avoided per
WP:FILMPLOT.

WP:FILMPLOT doesn't say avoid scene-by-scene recaps. It says avoid scene-by-scene breakdowns. The differences in the two sections of the text look superficial, except one version does not mention the stampede at all, and I don't see why.
Banedon (

At the moment, the
WP:STATUSQUO version of the plot summary doesn't include the opening stampede, since it could be a minor detail and plot summaries are meant to be concise.
Lord Sjones23 (

Are you suggesting the stampede is a minor detail? Are you also suggesting that there is an edit war ongoing over the section?
Banedon (

Just a quick word regarding the invoking of STATUSQUO. First and foremost, this is an essay, not a policy or guideline, but it is a common behavior during a dispute that shares the spirit of existing policies
WP:EPTALK and
WP:NOCON. As noted in its guidance, the purpose of doing so is to reduce "the risk of an edit war"; it does not say you must already be in one. Seek consensus, and when it does not work through editing, take your efforts to a discussion. --

Comment, I don't recall having ever watched this film so I'm just going off the plot summary. I think that the SJones version is marginally better as it cuts some fluff, though I think the point made in the Banedon version, "When Sabor attacks the gorillas and defeats Kerchak, Tarzan intervenes and kills Sabor with a spear, gaining Kerchak's reluctant approval" adds context whereas the SJones version makes it sound like Tarzan just spiked Sabor one day, possibly while he was on the toilet. Same with "Clayton mortally wounds Kerchak and fights Tarzan across the treetops, but inadvertently strangles himself to death", the lack of mentioning vines that is present in the Banedon version makes it sound like a David Carradine incident. That's my two cents.
