Given the improvements made to this article in the past couple of months, since it was rated "unknown" (by the Geography and Mountain projects) and "stub" (by the Virginia project), I'm flagging it as "start" class, though requesting review by each project, since I've made most of the improvements, and thus am not particularly impartial.-- WaldoJ ( talk) 04:48, 14 September 2008 (UTC) reply

Based on the examples given on the Wikiproject Virginia page this article is clearly at least C-Caliber, I have updated is rating as such. Arbogastlw ( talk) 17:25, 11 June 2009 (UTC) reply

The Waltons

I don't see how Schuyler is part of the Southwest Mountains. It's a little hilly around Schuyler, but if they're on the eastern slope of anything, it's the Blue Ridge. The mountains to the west of Schuyler extend clear to the Shenandoah Valley, while the Southwest Mountains are a ridge that stands alone from the Blue Ridge. This seems like a reference that should be excised. -- WaldoJ ( talk) 02:23, 1 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Having heard no objection (or support :) after waiting four and a half months, and also having been unable to locate any evidence that Schuyler is considered a part of the Southwest Mountains, I'm going to excise this reference.-- WaldoJ ( talk) 04:48, 14 September 2008 (UTC) reply

Suggested Improvements

After reading a handful of entries for other mountain ranges, here are some improvements that would benefit this entry:

  • description of land ownership (i.e., public vs private)
  • natural features
  • history of development
  • the Peters Mountain facility
  • flora
  • fauna
  • weather
  • tourism
  • physiography
    • age and development in comparison to the Blue Ridge
  • origin of name
  • towns within
  • Jefferson's description of

-- WaldoJ ( talk) 00:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC) reply

Any or all of the above would be good to add to the article. My initial though was that the article would most benefit from a section on the specific geology (if such information is available), plus something on whatever is known about the history - any native tribes known to have lived there, discovery by colonists etc.-- Kubigula ( talk) 19:46, 25 September 2008 (UTC) reply

Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Southwest Mountains/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Suggestions for improvement:
  • sections need to be added and expanded on
    • Geology, geography (e.g. lakes, rivers)
    • flora and fauna
    • historical significance - expand on why the NPS declared part of the range as a Rural Historic District
  • a map highlighting its size and location within Virginia and/or USA
  • who where the first explorers to map the range?
  • how did the range get its name and/or any other alternate names for it?
  • any significance to indigenous peoples?
  • wiki link the mountains within the range. One possibility is to create a table of mountains/peaks with their elevation in metres and feet.
  • do not use contractions and try to improve on the grammar as it's a bit choppy in places with somewhat unrelated sentences grouped together in paragraphs.
