As documented in the archived 2006 discussion, the Nebraska region is called "Sandhills" (one word) in Nebraska. Apparently this move was made in 2006. Why was this subsequently reversed? The state's newspapers differ. The Omaha World-Herald uses "Sand Hills": see, for example, this article. The Lincoln Journal Star uses "Sandhills": see, for example, this article. An AP story in the Grand Island Independent used "Sandhills". An editorial in the McCook Daily Gazette used "Sandhills". The Kearney Hub appears to use "Sand Hills", but most of the stories in which I found it were taken from the World-Herald. The Chadron Record seems to use Sandhills, again in AP stories. The Unicameral Update, the Legislature's official news magazine, uses "Sandhills".

Outside of the newspapers, a press release from Gov. Dave Heinemann's office uses "Sandhills". The Nebraska Department of Travel & Tourism seems to use "Sandhills". The Lower Niobrara Natural Resources District, based in Butte, seems to use "Sandhills".

I think User:Grand51paul is exaggerating when he says that "nobody" uses "Sand Hills"—the World-Herald is a good counterexample. However, it seems like more in-state sources use "Sandhills" than "Sand Hills". I see that the article as moved from "Sandhills (Nebraska)" to "Sand Hills (Nebraska)" without discussion in May 2006, despite an earlier discussion that cited Google evidence supporting "Sandhills". So I've deleted it from here -- there doesn't seem to be any need to have two copies lying around. The problem with trying to fix the references is that they used to be links to external web pages but the links have been lost. Dricherby ( talk) 17:33, 3 May 2008 (UTC) reply

I've done my best to sort out the references. Most of them were web pages, so the loss of the links made this difficult. I Googled for similar material but, in most cases, I was unable to find pages that matched the descriptions and also supported the statements they were supposed to provide citations for. Most of these statements have been given "Citation needed" tags.

I've also edited out some of the more florid prose and tried to improve the structure of the article. Perhaps the editor who wrote the section can come back and fill in the references I couldn't find? Dricherby ( talk) 18:34, 3 May 2008 (UTC) reply

I've excised the following sentence and reference: "Because of the extensive grasslands, the Sand Hills are one of the world's most productive cattle ranching areas. ^[1]" This largely duplicates a sentence in the preceding paragraph. I've reverted an edit that removed a large chunk of material on the ecology of the Sandhills and replaced it with a main-article link to a new article, Nebraska Sand Hills mixed grasslands, to which the excised material was moved.

The ecology of the Sandhills is one of the area's more noteworthy aspects, and would certainly be of interest to many readers coming to this article, especially to people who've heard of the Sandhills in the context of the controversy over the Keystone pipeline project. Compelling these readers to follow a link in order to find that information seems like a disservice.
