Comment from merged article talk page

For your information, I created for the French-language Wikipédia a similar page, although this one is of movies shot in San Francisco, California. It is quite exhaustive, although I didn't list TV films nor films set in San Francisco but not shot there. I also excluded movies that only had a scene or two in San Francisco, keeping only those which had most of their plot set in the City. -- Arnaudh 21:35, 29 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Merger

List of films set in San Francisco and List of television shows set in San Francisco are essentially duplicates of this article. A merge is proposed.-- DaveOinSF 07:13, 11 February 2007 (UTC) reply

List of films set in San Francisco is not identical to the List of television shows set in San Francisco. Also, there are many films set in San Francisco which were made before the popularization of television, notably The Maltese Falcon. I recommend an expansion of the list of films set in San Francisco, similiar to the London in film. Swfong 21:17, 5 March 2007 (UTC) reply

That's not what I said. List of films set in San Francisco and List of television shows set in San Francisco are duplicates of San Francisco in popular culture, not of each other.-- DaveOinSF 22:25, 6 March 2007 (UTC) reply
Agreed, I will merge them now, seeing as this debate has remained less than volatile since February. Jdcooper ( talk) 19:32, 3 January 2008 (UTC) reply
  • Ok, I completed the two highlighted merges, someone will have to look at the list of television programmes to make sure no reality ones are in the fiction ones, since what i know about american television could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Furthermore, I ripped the little list of songs out of here and merged it into the more comprehensive list at the page which was listed as the "main article". It didn't make sense to only have a partial list, and the other article has the song lists in a lot better context. Jdcooper ( talk) 20:41, 3 January 2008 (UTC) reply

Film section

There should probably be a distinction between films with stories that are set in San Francisco with those that were merely filmed in the area without narratively establishing San Francisco as where the story takes place. Harold and Maude is a good example; while the production took place in the Bay area--and many locations are recognizable to locals--the story itself doesn't state where it takes place. There may be other films on this list, although I'm not sure which ones without doing research. (Similarly, nearly every classic Hollywood film could be considered "set" in Southern California merely because they contain exterior location shots with recognizable backgrounds)

I would advocate removing such films from the list entirely, but maybe there is a way to divide the list if an editor wants to make the effort.

Movie

On Youtube, there is a two-part movie set in SF: Final Days of Planet Earth. 2006, directed by Robert Lieberman. I think this should go in under movies or miniseries, which it is described as in the Wikipedia article. Kdammers ( talk) 03:35, 2 July 2023 (UTC) reply
