Drug planes
I so wanted to put the rumors of drug planes landing on the back straight in, but couldn't find any references. But now that it is in I can confirm that those rumors have been around for years. I've worked in the racing biz around Atlanta for 15 years and have talked to guys who swore they heard the planes landing at night.

First Race
There appears to be a consensus among a group of Atlanta SCCA members that the first race ever at Road Atlanta was a SCCA regional, not the Can-Am in September of 1970. It’s also been suggested the first SCCA National Championship race was called the American Road Race of Champions (it became the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic – the CSPRRC – later).

Is there any
reliable source mentioning the SCCA Regional? You're right about the runoffs; it changed names in 1973.
