I do not agree with the brief history given on this subject, as in the 1800's African americans were not allowed to own land, and as such, could not have been the major contributing factor to the formation of the Canyon, the more likely causes were the intensive cultivation under agricultural practices of that time, and not contributable to african americans solely.
