Wd like to add:

Much of the land adjacent to Ocean Beach that later became the Sunset district, Richmond district, and Golden Gate Park, was sand. Adolph Sutro, who once mayor of SF, owned a good deal of SF land, including that which held the Cliff House and Sutro Baths, just north of Ocean Beach, where on weekends they had races or buggies or promenades on the one road there. Though Wiki has a good article on Golden Gate Park, mentioning Scottish gardener John McClaren, for whom McClaren Park and McClaren Golf Courses were named, I don't think it mentions Sutro [and I'm not sure that he did!] having imported Australian eucalyptus trees that grew on its top soil placed over the sand. Sutro's home was what later became beautifuol Sutro Heights Park, which he used 18 gardeners to maintain. There's some information and great old time photos at this site:

The third paragraph in the “Surfing” section exhibits the point of view of a select group of surfers who think of themselves as the Ocean Beach “enforcers.” Kelly’s Cove is their “turf.” That the local surfers at Kelly’s are the most dedicated surfers in San Francisco is pure hyperbole. In any case, this POV (and attitude) is one not universally accepted by local, native surfers at Ocean Beach. Most local, native San Francisco surfers paddle out at whatever section of the beach is breaking best on any given day, and tend to leave the “enforcing” up to the big, cold, and gnarly nature of Ocean Beach waves. Kelly’s Cove is not usually the best part of the beach at which to surf, it certainly is not the roughest. In fact, because of its position at the far north end of the beach, Kelly’s Cove tends to suffer the most from the swell deflecting influence of the Marin headlands and Point Reyes. As such, the waves at Kelly’s are usually significantly smaller than those at other locations along the nearly 3 miles of peaks between Fulton Street and Sloat Boulevard. Usually the “roughest” part of Ocean Beach is the middle of that stretch; the section most exposed to the prevailing swell direction . . . the “enforcers” at Kelly’s notwithstanding.
