History of Niutao

1: What do you think of Niutao Atoll? 2: Are you from Niutao? 3: What do you know about the battle of Tāga A Kaupapa? And finally, are your ancestors from Tuvalu? GeoYeeter ( talk) 18:41, 10 October 2020 (UTC) reply

No one is going to check out this page I bet. It's just about a historical Tuvalu island, nobody wants to talk about that but me. If you do check this out, thank you! GeoYeeter ( talk) 19:46, 10 October 2020 (UTC) reply

Moresby didn´t touch Niutao. The route of HMS Basilisk was: Niuatoputapu, Niuafoou, Futuna, Rotuma, Mitchell´s Group (possibly a phantom island), Ellice Island. Tuamotu12 ( talk) 11:57, 1 November 2022 (UTC) reply

I'm sorry but that wasn't exact. On July 20, 1871, John Moresby landed the sail and steam-powered sloop HMS Basilisk on an island that he referred to as Hudson Island. Citation: "On the 20th we communicated with Hudson Island, in latitude 6° 30', longitude 176° 40' E. The description of the foregoing island will serve equally for this; but here the fringing shore reef is composed of red coral, which looks beautiful when the receding surf allows its bright wet tints to show. The poor people, who are Christians, but go about nearly unclothed, received us very kindly—one man actually kissing me with every sign of affection. Leaving Hudson, we sailed in search of an island named Gran-cocal, the existence of which is both affirmed and denied, but could find no trace of it, though we sailed right over its alleged position."

Francisco Antonio Mourelle de la Rúa called the island of Niutao "Gran cocal". The position given by Moresby for Hudson Island is about 80 km southwest of Niutao. Whether Hudson Island was actually Niutao or some other island is unclear. Tuamotu12 ( talk) 12:48, 4 November 2022 (UTC) reply
