Merge proposal

The topic of this article is also covered in the History section of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. It doesn't need to be duplicated. -- Dalbury( Talk) 18:22, 23 December 2005 (UTC) reply

The new article does need to be merged as the original does not elaborate on the Greek history related to Turnbull settlement -- Urbanows( Talk) 03:07, 24 December 2005 (UTC) reply

It would be much more appropriate for this content to be merged into the more likely to be accessed 'New Smyrna Beach' article! -- Thekohser( Talk) 06:53, 08 April 2006 (UTC) reply

Someone might mention NSB's major involvement in "Bike-Week". Thousandas of Bikers flood the streets, and make life miserable for the natives. Paco 14:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Copyvio in History section

I just deleted the entire History section because it matches the content of [1] word for word. While it is just possible that the City of New Smyrna Beach copied their History section from Wikipedia, I think that is highly unlikely. A new History section will have to be built from scratch using reliable sources. -- Donald Albury 01:06, 9 November 2006 (UTC) reply

understandable, but the new History section had a lot of factual errors. Have corrected, but need citations. -- Emb021 ( talk) 19:38, 15 April 2008 (UTC) reply

Unsourced comment deleted

I have deleted the sentence, "New Smyrna Beach, especially Canaveral National Seashore, is said by the U.S. Park Service to be the dividing line between zones 9 and 10, meaning the point at which the United States actually becomes tropical.", from the Climate section because a citation was requested two months ago, but has not been provided. Per the varifiability policy, do not re-add the material until a citation to [[WP:RS|reliable sources has been provided. -- Donald Albury 03:25, 7 January 2007 (UTC) reply

Truett Cathy is a Resident of NSB.

Truett Cathy does live in New Smyrna Beach half of the year, I'm not sure why people keep deleting that fact from the notable persons section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.31.113.234 ( talk) 18:15, 30 January 2008 (UTC) reply

Then find a reliable source that says so. Wikipedia policy requires that information in articles be verifiable. -- Donald Albury 20:06, 30 January 2008 (UTC) reply

In the spring of 1768, seeking to escape poverty and cruel oppression, 1,402 pilgrims left their homes in Smyrna, Asia Minor; the Mani area of Greece; Crete, Greece; Italy, Corsica and Minorca. About 500 of these pilgrims were Greeks. They sailed for the New World under the leadership of Englishman, Dr. Andrew Turnbull, to seek a better life for themselves and their children. After a period of indentured service, they were promised freedom and a small piece of land in a place called Florida.

Spanish missions in New Smyrna

I have hidden the following statement in the History section, "It should be noted that there were Spanish missionaries present in the area as early as the 1560s, and several structures in the city may be dated to this era." I am unaware of any record of Spanish missions in Florida along the coast south of Saint Augustine, except at Santa Lucea ( St. Lucie Inlet, Florida and at Tequesta (Miami), neither of which lasted for more than a few years, and for neither of which any trace survives. The mission buildings of the first Spanish occupation (until 1763) were post and beam with thatch roofs, with or without thatch, or rarely, plank sides, and dirt floors. Stone ruins in the vicinity of New Smyrna that have in the past been attributed to "Spanish missions" have been reliably identified as remnants of 19th century (pre-Second Seminole War) plantations.

"Popular with both sharks and tourists"

According to CNN. [2] It would be interesting to see if there is a way to work that quote into the article. - Wikidemon ( talk) 20:21, 5 March 2010 (UTC) reply

There should be a wikipedia page for King Dave.

I think that King Dave is by far one of the most well known people in the town of New Symrna Beach, I would know I live there I if people know him and they say King Dave yeah we know him. He's been in this town since he was born. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Theinvisibleman375 ( talkcontribs) 21:38, 19 November 2010 (UTC) reply

Invite to Viva Florida 500

I'd like to invite fellow Wikipedians interested in Florida history to join in our new project page for celebrating our state's 500th anniversay at Viva_Florida_500. Please review and join in getting this project off the ground. It's more than just about Ponce de Leon and his landing it is also about other cultures and what new content we can bring into Wiki such as adding new information about the Native Cultures that were here when this period of discovery began.-- Ourhistory153 ( talk) 14:39, 2 October 2011 (UTC) reply

Bizarre claim

"The colony occupies a notable place in history by being the single largest attempt by a member of the British Crown at colonization in the New World."

What does this even mean ? What is "a member of the British Crown" ? Is a scottish physician a member of the British Crown ? Eregli bob ( talk) 05:58, 21 January 2013 (UTC) reply
