Merger

The 98th Range Wing was redesignated Nevada Test and Training Range in 2011. If there is no consensus on merging the articles, the two articles need to be disambiguated. Lineagegeek ( talk) 00:55, 13 January 2013 (UTC) reply

Merge it, Lineagegeek. Buckshot06 (talk) 04:57, 13 January 2013 (UTC) reply
OK. Now that I have edited the 98th Range Wing to something like a C Class article -- I still need to show the replacement of subordinate units by directorates in 2011 and add cites to remove the tag for lack of citations in the section and have looked at this page more closely and perhaps add images, I believe separate articles and disambiguation is the way to go.
This page needs expansion to include earlier names, management by the 554th Operations Support Wing, 99th Range Group, other elements of the 99th Air Base Wing, earlier names (Continental (something) Range comes to mind, but I'm not a USAF installations maven), unclassified references to classified projects carried on in the range, etc. Once that expansion is done I don't think the articles would be compatible.
So, while I think that the wing article is primary based on notability, I think most people looking at an encyclopedia would be looking for the installation, not the unit. I'll do the moves and hatnotes if needed, but I'd like some input on possible names. I tend to prefer a hatnote to a separate disambiguation page, but I'm looking for suggestions on the most excellent names. -- Lineagegeek ( talk) 23:31, 13 January 2013 (UTC) reply
I'll give it a week, but right now my inclination is to move this article to Nevada Test and Training Range (geographic area) and move the 98th Range Wing article here once the space is free, with hatnotes on each. -- Lineagegeek ( talk) 15:23, 15 January 2013 (UTC) reply
  • Oppose. While the unit has been redesignated, the range itself is clearly the primary topic. Article disambiguation is needed only when there is no primary topic. So since the range is the primary topic, it should remain at the primary name space. The unit can be disambiguated and navigation can be address through hat notes. This is going to need a full WP:RM discussion. Vegaswikian ( talk) 20:45, 21 January 2013 (UTC) reply
A belated welcome to the discussion VW. I think the last week's discussion indicates that the clarity concerning which is primary is not so clear. The discussion you requested was already opened, so join on in. I assume you agree that merger is inappopropriate.-- Lineagegeek ( talk) 23:07, 21 January 2013 (UTC) reply
No, the merger is totally inappropriate! You have an article on an area of land which is notable on its own. Then you have an article about a military unit. Just because they happen to share a name at the current time, is not a reason to do a merge. Two articles are totally appropriate. Trying to add military history of a unit to a training range is simply not the best choice. Vegaswikian ( talk) 00:05, 22 January 2013 (UTC) reply
I find it very strange that the Air Force chose to rename an organization after a piece of real estate.. but they did. I would rename the unit article Nevada Test and Training Range (Military Unit) and leave this article the way it is. Bwmoll3 ( talk) 18:20, 28 January 2013 (UTC) reply
