Discussion to merge Mount Vernon District, VA into Mount Vernon, Virginia

Support

  • Support as proposer I believe that the information from the poorly sourced district article would be much better if included here. The topic can state that it can refer to both a CDP and a governmental district. By combining the articles, one can find all of the information about one area in one place and in an orderly fashion. -- Fiftytwo thirty ( talk) 15:52, 10 February 2010 (UTC) reply

This article is actually under construction. We are attempting to add more information to it. It would be foolish to merge this with the article on Mount Vernon, VA (CDP) because the district of Mount Vernon, which is actually an official, governmental division within Fairfax County with an established government center, covers parts of several CDPs such as Groveton, Lorton, Fort Hunt, Belle Haven, ect. Mount Vernon District is different than Mount Vernon, VA. Not all of Mount Vernon, VA lies within Mount Vernon District. To avoid confusion, lets keep the two articles separate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.66.36.43 ( talk) 21:36, 10 February 2010 (UTC) reply

  • I understand that the Mt. Vernon congressional district is different and includes other CDPs, however, most of the information that is provided is either not properly sourced or could easily be found in the CDPs that the district contains. By changing the Mt. Vernon article to say something like "Mt. Vernon is a CDP located in..., Including the first two paragraphs of the original text, and then say: "There is also a congressional district located in southern Fairfax County called the Mt. Vernon Congressional district, which encompasses the CDPs of... and has a population of..." The information in the other sections is or should be in some form in the articles about the various CDPs. In summary, the article does not have the nessasary information (such as what the current politicians elected from this district), and has a lot of fluff such as the 'community activities' and the Official Newspaper(???) that belong in the CDP articles. -- Fiftytwo thirty ( talk) 21:51, 11 February 2010 (UTC) reply

I understand your argument. Yet only parts of certain CDPs are located within Mount Vernon. For example, the CDP of Groveton is located in both Mount Vernon District and Lee District. This is the same for the Mount Vernon CDP and the Hybla Valley CDP. The CDPs are only areas designated to collect demographics. A district is an established entity with a government and set boundaries. The CDPs do not fall perfectly into the district. A CDP does not have an official newspaper; the district of Mount Vernon has the Mount Vernon Gazette. Community activities relate to the community; a CDP is not a set community of people like a district is. I understand that this article is rather thin in regards to information, but it is still a work in progress and should be treated as such, not as an end product. Obviously other contributors on Wikipedia will be willing to add more information and sources. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.163.72.87 ( talk) 03:20, 16 February 2010 (UTC) reply

  • Okay, however, the underlying problem is that it is a poorly sourced article. We need reliable sources and not have repetitive content that could be linked to. Your additions need to be verifiable, and not be original research. I also disagree that a "district" is a "community" as you put it. A district to me is a governmental unit, and that is how it is treated by Fairfax County. CDPs are slightly more localized, for example, Belle Haven is different from Mount Vernon. -- Fiftytwo thirty ( talk) 21:28, 16 February 2010 (UTC) reply
