Temple presidents

Hey, Carterdriggs, who is this "project chair" who has the power to determine notability? Funny, I thought these things were done by consensus, not by authority. ;-) –  jaksmata 07:29, 1 October 2007 (UTC) reply

2008 protests

Removing the reference as they are not really pertinent in the overall history of the temple. Perhaps this would better fit at the criticisms of the LDS church page, where it is more relevant. Nothingofwater ( talk) 17:30, 10 November 2008 (UTC) reply

  • I agree - this article is about a building, not about policies of the church, or who might disagree with them. The fact that protests were held near the temple isn't significant to this particular article. –  jaksmata 22:10, 10 November 2008 (UTC) reply
  • I basically agree. If the temple were in any way damaged or otherwise affected by the protests—e.g., people in the temple couldn't get out, or people trying to get in couldn't get in—then perhaps a brief mention would be appropriate. But if there were just protests in the vicinity of or on the property of the temple, probably not worth mentioning because of WP:RECENTISM concerns. • I can see your points. From my perspective, I am hearing a lot of rumblings that the new generation of LGTBs consider this round of protests as something akin to the defining moment of the Stonewall riots. Though not quite as huge to the movement at large, it appears the younger generation certainly thinks of it this way. The Stonewall Inn has its own article, and the events that happened there are of such significance in the gay rights movement that they spelled out in detail. Sure the Los Angeles temple and Salt Lake Temple have another more important significance. I guess what I am saying is I will defer my edits, and time will tell if the significance is there to include it in the article here. -- Descartes1979 ( talk) 01:41, 11 November 2008 (UTC) reply
    • Do you know of any sources that single out either temple in this way? I know there were a lot of protests all around California; is there anything to suggest the LA temple was some sort of focal point to it all? (I'm asking sincerely as I'm not too familiar with the recent sources on these incidents.) Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:20, 11 November 2008 (UTC) reply
      • Actually, I think the Oakland California Temple was more of a focal point. Freeway offramps needed to be shut down up there. Having multiple temples involved as a location of protests is just another reason not to include the information in this article. Alanraywiki ( talk) 02:45, 11 November 2008 (UTC) reply
    • The protests indeed focused on the LA temple and the Salt Lake temple - both of which garnered several thousand protesters that were singling out the Mormon church specifically for their involvement with Proposition 8. There were a few minor incidences of violence at the LA Temple protest, but they were mostly peaceful. Later (Last Sunday), there were protests in front of the Oakland Temple, and the San Diego Temple, but these protests were much smaller than the LA and SLC temple protests which were on Thursday and Friday of last week respectively (if I am remembering my news correctly). Here are a few news stories that describe the protests and the role that the temples had specifically in each:

Wait.. do any of you own a TV? Whether you agree with them or not, the marches need to be mentioned in this article, even if its just few sentences. Period. Its omission from the article is very, very glaring. -- 98.232.180.37 ( talk) 06:09, 30 January 2009 (UTC) reply
  • Again, these events have had no lasting effect on the temples mentioned here. Some could (and will) argue that temples represent the LDS church as a whole, and that the protests have had lasting effect on the church as a whole. But that's more of a philosophical question, and doesnt make the grade for what gets recorded here. History will hopefully show for sure, but inserting current events and news stories here unbalances the encyclopedic nature of these article. Now before anyone accuses me of taking sides or trying to suppress anything I will re-iterate what I mentioned above - this is a topic that is much better suited to the criticism of the LDS church page. (By the way, i DO own a TV, and a radio, and read the papers, etc... i havent heard a peep about this for months.) Nothingofwater ( talk) 20:09, 30 January 2009 (UTC) reply

Unless there is a hidden cache of sourcing, Richards is primarily known in connection to his fundraising for the Los Angeles Temple and should be mentioned there with a redirect. His legal and political careers have not been particularly noteworthy, per these sources. czar 19:36, 19 August 2022 (UTC) reply

I'm sure there's some more sourcing in US Govt documents. I just haven't had a chance to look yet.
