If this is solely for people born in Los Angeles, as opposed to those who live there, such people as Ace Young and Elliott Yamin do not belong. I will erase them. If someone feels inclined to expand the definition, then they may be re-submitted. Michael 04:03, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply

A page similar to this one. List of people from San Francisco, is currently under review as an article for deletion, for reasons which would apply to this article as well. I am conducting an RfC on the talk page of the above-mentioned list to determine whether the concensus agrees on keeping such lists or not. Any and all comments are more than welcome. The lead says this is for people from the city of los angeles. Many of these people are from the metro area. We should either change the lead or remove the county folks. Her Wikipedia page cites the statement that she was born in LA to here, but it's marked as an unreliable source in that article. Also, she went to Palmdale High, which is not in LA. I can't find anything other than cagematch.net which says she's even associated with Los Angeles. Most sources mention the fact that she lives in San Francisco. I removed him. Yes, he lives in Los Angeles. His tumblr page says he does. However, he wasn't born in Los Angeles, and he doesn't seem to be associated with Los Angeles. He just lives in Los Angeles. If this list is going to include every random staff writer of a comedy website who happens to have a wikipedia article and lives in Los Angeles it's going to get awfully darned long. I would like to make the following change to the lead:

The following is a list of notable people who were either born in, are current residents of, or are otherwise closely associated with or from the city of Los Angeles, California, USA.

As it stands, there are almost certainly too many notable people who live in Los Angeles to be included in this list. If we keep it down to natives and people closely associated with the city we'll have a more useful list. Of course I realize that it's not so easy to determine what "closely associated with" means, but on the other hand, it's not so easy to keep up with which random semicelebs in the industry have moved to Simi Valley or something either. Hi. First of all, kudo to all the good work you do on the list. Second, I certainly agree that people born in LA belong on the list. I wonder whether the second category -- "closely associated with" -- is a good one. It is very gray. Also, it is not typical of such lists. More typical would be "born in or resided in". It is also I should point out not typical to limit to only current residents. So, my suggestion would be ""born in or resided in".-- Epeefleche ( talk) 00:24, 30 December 2012 (UTC) reply

Thanks, you do a lot of good work on it yourself! My problem with including current and past residents is that so many people in the industry and its associated endeavors end up living in LA for a while at some point and it's just irrelevant to anything, because they just moved there for a job and they often end up moving somewhere else for another job later without making any impact on the city itself. I'd like to see the list only include people who had some kind of effect on the city, culturally, politically, somehow. Hence I like the phrase "closely associated with" although I'm in no way wedded to it. I just don't want to list every random musician who lived in LA for six months to record an album. People like Charlie Tuna, Jack Webb, Bukowski, Ray Bradbury (I didn't notice he wasn't on the list yet! Forrest Ackerman too!) Anyway, I don't know how to phrase it properly, but that's my feeling. Should he be on the list? Born in Beverley Hills, went to college in Pomona, did theater work in LA and at Pasadena playhouse, moved to LA in 2010 for some reason per the source I just added. As far as I can tell he still lives here. As can be seen from the discussion directly above this one I favor a slightly restrictive inclusion criterion, but at least one respected editor disagrees with me. Thus I threw in the source saying he moved to LA in 2010 and am bringing this here for conversation in case anyone cares strongly. I don't really; having working in small theater in LA and lived here on and off suggests more of a connection to me than, e.g., some 20 year old getting a job on a short-lived TV series and living here for 45 minutes or so.— alf laylah wa laylah ( talk) 16:56, 24 April 2014 (UTC) reply

Jan Crull Jr was added to this WP earlier today without citation. I looked for a citation to add, but could only find indications that Jan was born in The Netherlands, emigrated to the US, became a US citizen, and is based in Chicago, Illionios, all of which is reflected in Jan's WP. Rather than arbitrarily deleting Jan from the list, I added a "citation needed" tag to the entry. It is possible there is a citation that I did not find. If not, should be deleted from this list. The criteria of this list is "notable people who were either born in, lived in, are current residents of, or are otherwise closely associated with or around the city of Los Angeles ... Those not born in Los Angeles have their places/states/countries of birth listed instead."

An editor has now twice deleted a notable person who -- according to refs -- lived in LA. He has decided that the person must live there for a certain number of years (though he has not indicated how many that is; but the person he is deleting is reported by the refs as having lived in LA, and done so for two years). He has not addressed the fact that no such requirement is in this list.

I don't think it is right for an editor to delete notable persons that meet this list's criteria. And what's next? If someone is born here, but moves after a month, he will delete them? If they attend a college for only two years, he will delete them from the list of alumni?
