Anyone born or have at once in their lives established residency in Hawaii is considered "from Hawaii." The Rock lived in Hawaii for several years, attending Washington School near Waikiki. Noticed that two of the most influential Roman Catholics associated with the modern-day diocese (besides our saints) were deleted for a reason that they are only listed/known here. I re-added them in, because they are actually known rather widely as being "special" figures in Hawaiian Catholic history. Bishop Alencastre was the first bishop to be raised in Hawaii (arriving soon after his birth in Portugal), and Bishop Silva was the first bishop to be born in Hawaii (though he was raised away from Hawaii, he has local roots).
The work of Bishop Alencastre resulted in the elevation of Hawaii to the level of a diocese by the Pope just three months following his death, following his establishment of St. Stephen's Seminary and many churches and schools, and such acknowledgement by the Pope himself (and such exemplary work in the community) would seem to qualify him as a "famous person from Hawaii." Besides the seminary, schools, and churches, Alencastre Street is also named in honor of him. Bishop "Larry" is the first Hawaii-born priest to become the Bishop of his "hometown;" again, in my opinion, that certainly qualifies him as being a "famous person from Hawaii." They are both known for their "unusual" accomplishments that set them apart from the other bishops of Hawaii, and while they are not known by all in Hawaii, neither are quite a few of the people on this list.
I do not consider this list to be exhaustive, but I also think that it should be less focused on exclusiveness, as it seems that editors are removing people who are not "famous enough" rather than adding people who are "more famous" than the average person "from Hawaii." For that reason, I do believe that our two bishops should remain on this list, and if not for that, then because they are more widely known than others on this list. Members of the Roman Catholic Church are actually quite familiar with bishops from other areas of the world, especially those who are famous/known for "special things," and these two bishops are both vital to the Portugese Catholic history of Hawaii/America.

- I posted those deletions at the time, before I read your comments here (I noticed you are not logged in, and have no user talk page). I wanted to avoid a list that exhaustively lists every officer of any sort, e.g. governor, us. senator/congressperson, mayor, councilperson, or religious officers, e.g. top buddhist priests, orthodox leaders, catholic officers, heads of churches, etc., unless they qualified as famous outside of Hawaii. At the time I deleted several entries that seemed to be non-notable, and listed in the edit notes for those changes that I had found nothing in Google News, for example, one measurement of 'fame'. I believed these entries were non-notable except to those readers who specifically had an interest in the Catholic religion in the region of Hawaii (in which case we should just make a list of prominent roman catholics from Hawaii, rather than lumping it with the famous persons list. From your comments here, it looks like Alecastre qualifies as famous, but Silva does not. As far as editing philosophy, that varies, and you can see the relevant articles at the Metawiki such as Inclusionist or Deletionist. In most cases I am more inclusionist. For now I'll revert my own deletion of Alecastre. If you still disagree on Silva, please post some references as I was too lazy to look further Santaduck 01:20, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

- Hi Santaduck. Thanks for the speedy reply! I think I may have started something I can't finish - I usually don't get involved in articles with lists (because of the vagueness); however, I have an opportunity to learn something in this regard. I can see your point regarding the vagueness of using 'notable' without clarification (as well as 'famous' without clarification). I still think that 'famous' is too strong and should be changed to 'notable' with the proper clarification. As I'm inexperienced in dealing with these lists, I don't want to dive in (yet) and change the name. I'd like some feedback on exactly what we want to achieve. We could view the situation from a very general point of view; for example, do we want separate articles that list:
- Sportspeople from Hawaii.
- Hawaiian filmstars.
- etc....
- just like we have a list of Politicans from Hawaii, or do we just keep those who have contributed something significant ? Of course, we could just keep the current article and change the name to 'Notable Hawaiians' (or something similar) with the appropriate clarification of the word 'notable'. My problem is I don't know how significant the achievements of any of these people have been. That's why I think it may be better to have separate articles for Hawaiian sportspeople, where the condition for their notability or fame is less stringent (a little like lists of American football teams etc...). I think this latter solution is better and it means we can transfer most of this article to these (possibly) future articles and keep this article (with it's present name) for the truly famous Hawaiians (worldwide celebrities etc...) - I don't know of any such Hawaiians, but I might find someone in this article. Well, let's see how it goes...

- But you said you didn't recognize any world-famous names... how about Michelle Wie, Yvonne Elliman (Think Saturday Night Fever album: if I can't have you; I don't want nobody baby...), Adam West (Batman), Tia Carrere (Wayne's World), Jack Johnson (musician), as well as Nicole Kidman and Bette Midler... =) Santaduck 03:20, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Due to the recent listings of many non-famous (not famous outside of HI) people, here are some suggested guidelines. If the person does not have a wikipedia article, a justification and google news reference should be listed here in the discussion area. If you feel strongly that a whole list of people should be considered, you should consider making a separate list article, for example, List of war heroes from Hawaii, or List of actors from Hawaii, rather than listing them in the list of famous people. Also, we should reconsider listing people who have only resided here solely for the brief purposes of work or school. Santaduck 21:51, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

In November 2005, Honolulu Magazine chose a list of their choices of the 100 most influential citizens of the last 100 years. The articles, with pics and bios are on line at: Honolulu Magazine Many of their nominees are NOT on this list, including: Eddie Aikau, Neal Blaisdell, Charles Campbell, Jack de Mello, Jon de Mello, Webley Edwards, Frank Fasi, Jack Hall, Abigail Kawananakoa, Hal Lewis aka J. Akuhead Pupule, Ah Quon McElrath, Mary Kawena Pukui, Maurice Sullivan, Rell Sunn, Madge Tennent, and several more. Each of the people on this list deserves a Wikipedia article, IMHO.
