This list of museums in the state was separated from List of museums in the United States on December 14, 2007. Please see List of museums in the United States for all history prior to that date.

In February 2008 at Talk:List of museums in the United States, a consensus was reached on this statement on what kind of institutions to include on state museum-list articles:
- Historic houses or halls of fame may be listed if they function as or include public museums -- see Biltmore Estate, Plumb House, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame for examples. Art galleries that function primarily to sell art should not be listed, but public art museums that use "gallery" as part of their name may be listed. Nature centers and botanical gardens may be listed only if they contain historical or educational exhibits in a museum format.
Also inappropriate for this list are planetariums, aquaria and zoos, which have their own lists. Please follow these criteria when considering additional items for this list, or suggest changes at Talk:List of museums in the United States. Keep in mind there are lists for institutions similar to museums, as noted in the See also section of this article. Noroton ( talk) 00:50, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Maintained Los Angeles, San Diego & San Francisco as separate groupings for better interface of the city articles to this list & due to the overall size of this list of museums. See San Francisco for a good example of a featured article that incorporates a link to the San Francisco section of the List of museums in California. Thanks! I am moving the Riverside museums into a separate table. Recommend doing the same for all cities with more than 10 museums, because the "Elswere" table is getting excessively large. MissionInn.Jim ( talk) 21:08, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Many originally labeled as "San Francisco bay area" museums--which was really too large an area to have under just one heading--have now been labeled mostly per Santa Clara Valley article, East Bay labels per that article and per Santa Clara Valley article, and San Francisco Peninsula. Could be separated further into North Bay (San Francisco Bay Area) also under the SF Bay Area section head, which is actually what most (but not quite all) of everything in "San Francisco Bay Area" belongs to--that leaves out some things (e.g., Danville, CA, which isn't listed as being in the East Bay in that article, but probably should be? Unless it's grouped under some other subarticle that I can't think of). And a few others like that.
Monterey Bay Area--is a subset of Central Coast, but it makes more sense to use the subset because when people are thinking about museums, they'd like to find them in the same general area, not spread out over a couple hundred miles of coast. Typically when we discuss the Monterey Bay Area, it includes Monterey, Santa Cruz (and towns in between like Aptos), Carmel, Salinas, Watsonville--all in the same general area around monterey bay.
Hmm, I think I put mission san miguel in Monterey Bay Area, but shd probably go back to central coast.
Fixed Hollister-- listed in the Inland Empire?! That's just weird--not even close. Moved to Santa Clara Valley, because it's at the south end of that valley just beyond/around Gilroy.
The rest of the Elsewhere could be separated into:
- Central Valley
- Sacramento Valley
- San Joaquin Valley
- North Coast
- San Diego area
- Desert Area
- Sierras and Gold Country (?)
