Inconsistent numbers

Accordin to the "Comparison with other countries" section the US has a rate of 754. However, a rough estimate based on "Incarceration rate by state" would give a number of about 400 or so. Anyone know why the numbers differ? Gunnar Larsson ( talk) 15:18, 11 November 2012 (UTC) reply

754 is also the number given on United States incarceration rate. Even on this page there is at least one internal contradiction. The table says
Rank Jurisdiction Prisoners per 100,000 population
2 Mississippi 735
5 Alabama 634
but the color coding of the map has it the other way around. Art Carlson ( talk) 11:28, 26 December 2012 (UTC) reply

For the most part these numbers don't represent the source cited, which is footnote 2, "United States Bureau of Justice Statistics Prison Inmates At Midyear 2009." I changed the total on the top which was way off; but most of the others are also wrong, although they're much closer and the comparison is reasonably close for most of them. I found more recent reports, but they don't appear to be as detailed, at a glance. I don't know if they came up with more recent data but at the least it would help to get the same data as the source; although it might be better, if recent data is available to use it. Don't know if I'll have time to do it, certainly not right away. Zacherystaylor ( talk) 14:30, 30 September 2014 (UTC) reply

It's still to high but looking at the PDF seems to indicate that the national rates include both federal and state prisoners but the state rates only seem to include state which is their jurisdiction. The US state rate is only 447 with another 61 for federal which should total 508 but the 504 figure is what they have in the PDF. Possible rounding error maybe? I'm going to change it again. Unable to locate data source in source given

I cannot locate the source of the data. The data in pim09st10.csv, Table 10. Imprisonment rates of sentenced prisoners under jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities, by sex and jurisdiction, June 30, 2009, do not match those given here. Neither do they match the 2008 numbers given in the same file. However, all numbers correlate .99, so it makes little difference. -- Deleet ( talk) 15:38, 25 February 2015 (UTC) reply

New numbers from Bureau of Justice Statistics

There is updated statistics available on the pdf link at http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=5387 and were published on September 17, 2015

Before I update the page, any comments on the numbers at that site? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skapur ( talkcontribs) 03:42, 9 October 2015‎

That source only has state and federal prison numbers for 2014. It does not have jail numbers for 2014. So it is better to wait until December 2014 when "Correctional Populations In The United States, 2014" comes out. It will have jail numbers for 2014 too. -- Timeshifter ( talk) 16:08, 9 October 2015 (UTC) reply

Tables have been updated with 2016 data

Reference is:

Correctional Populations in the United States, 2016 (NCJ 251211). Published April 2018 by U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). By Danielle Kaeble and Mary Cowhig, BJS statisticians. See PDF. Appendix table 1 on page 11 has rates and counts by state. See page 1 "highlights" section for the "1 in ..." numbers. See table 4 on page 4 for a timeline of nationwide incarceration rates. See appendix table 3 on page 13, for "Persons held in custody in state or federal prisons or in local jails, 2000, 2010, and 2015–2016". It also has incarceration rates.

Method is to download the data tables, and then to open up the appendix table 1 data into freeware LibreOffice Calc. Then delete the unused columns and rows. Then copy and paste directly from Calc into tab2wiki. Run it, and then copy into the Wikipedia article. Add table formatting as necessary.

Sorting problems

The column "2016 rate per 100,000 adults" (in the first table) does not sort properly. When sorted, Kentucky appears at the top of the table (when it should be Oklahoma at the top). I don't know how to fix this sorting problem. Also, I was unable to make the widths of the top of the number row column (the gray area) match the widths of the rest of the table. Thanks for the territories table. I added rates and years to it.
I undid your integration though of territory numbers into the main tables. That messed up many things. Such as totals. And apparently the sorting. After undoing the integration the sorting is now working correctly.
I have worked on many lists and tables. And one has to avoid trying to do too many things with one table. Otherwise they are nearly impossible to keep updated in a timely way, and require far more work to do so. So it is often left broken and out of date. Better to pick a simpler focus and stick to it. -- Timeshifter ( talk) 06:45, 4 July 2019 (UTC) reply
