Pet Project

This page has become my pet project since I've been stationed away from home. I am pretty new to wikipedia, but I am computer savy so just let me know if I'm doing something wrong as far as the format of the article. I'm kind of writing it as I go along. There is very limited information on this area on the internet, so a lot of this information is getting its introduction right here. I plan to cite sources when I'm finished, but most of what I am pulling from is a local book entitled "Lake Murray: Legend and Leisure" Third Edition, Revised by Coy Bayne. This book is really more like a scrapbook of local stories or reprints from old newspapers or books. Be patient as I finish the article. I plan to cover everything from History and Geography all the way throught Ecology in this article.

I'm not positive we're searching for exact person/time frame. I am trying to find more on William Spencer Murray and private ventures during involvement period and after construction and the building of Lake Murray. ...jones@blanchardmachinery.com... - User:65.6.233.176 02:36, 10 January 2007 (UTC) reply

Somebody should write about the purple martin migration that blackens the sky for a couple weeks a year, bomb island, etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.130.7.65 ( talk) 16:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC) reply

stuff

In 2005 a monumental new back up dam project was finished. This huge new dam was placed in front of the existing dam, with a road going in between the two dams. It was placed there because of new Federal regulations requiring backup dams in earthquake areas (a fault line runs through Charleston) The old road on top of the dam is being repaved and will open up sometime in 2007 when the wideing of hwy. 6 is finished. While all the construction has been going on, the level of the lake was lowered about 13 feet for several years, now it is almost back to normal levels and lake use is increasing again.

Lake Murray's western side

According to some residents of Lexington county, in 1933 Gilbert Little of Lexington was the first to spot the "cross between a snake and something prehistoric" that later became known as "Messie". In 1990, Marvin B. Corder, US Army General (retired) and his son reported to the SC Fish and Wildlife Department that they saw a "serpent-like creature" of 40-60 feet in length. Though cryptophiles claim the lake is large enough to support a creature of this biomass, sightings are usually attributable to a sturgeon or catfish rather than any kind of Fortean phenomenon.

i'm moving this stuff here until i get the entire article finished.

My Wife's Family

As a resident of this area and married to one of the Wessingers who is also one of the historians for Shealy, Hendrix, Harmon, Lindler, Wessinger family, I can tell you that many people had farms in this area. The Lexington County Museum has an excellent exhibit at the Saluda Shoals park which is part of the Irmo Chapin Recreaction Commission. The Lake is a wonderful source of recreation, and helps keep the cost of power down but there is a lot of history that needs to be preserved. One thing is certain, the dam changed life in this region forever. 24.211.122.39 03:30, 23 March 2007 (UTC)fyrdawg589 reply
