FWIW, Keighley apparently was one of the towns involved in the first recorded town twinning, dating to 1920 (the other twin was apparently a Poix in France, probably Poix-du-Nord). -- Haruo 21:55, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

While the current information concerning South Asian immigration to the town looks fine, it would be great if further details could be added at some stage about other immigrant groups that have made the town their home over the decades. I only have vague knowledge of this subject but I understand that Keighley has seen quite substantial influxes of Irish, Ukrainian and Italian people. If someone could add some info' about these particular groups (properly referenced of course!) then I feel that would be a very decent, worthy contribution to this article. Evidently someone with a bone to pick with 1960s architecture and no familitary with NPOV wrote this section. It is thoroughly unacceptable for Wikipedia to take an editorial line that there was a "collective madness" or that certain buildings are "monstrosities". Looks like it's been fixed now. The comments about the more modern buildings seem fairly neutral and objective. Not sure I'd fully agree with the description of the terraced houses being "cramped". They're normally spacious enough for a single occupier or a couple without kids.... As a schoolboy growing up in Keighley (Which was controlled by the West Riding County Council at the time) I seem to remember being told that when it was a town borough, Keighley's was the largest borough in the country in terms of area. This was because it encompassed a large number of outlying villages such as Howarth, Oxenhope and beyond. That is a fact. If you look at official sources, such as the Land Registry, Keighley stretches much further than people would have you believe. Keighley is an odd place in the respect that residents of certain parts of the town actually claim they don't live in Keighley. It is a fact that the villages of Haworth, Oxenhope, Oakworth, Long Lee, Riddlesden, Cross Hills, Kildwick, Cononeley, Steeton, Silsden, Farnhill and Bradley are part of the town and this can be proven with Land Registry documentation. However, the residents of these areas try to hide this and thus it is no wonder that Keighley pride is low when the people in the town's more affulent regions try to disassociate themselves with the town. On this basis I propose that Wikipedia relies on the factual information provided from the Land Registry and these are correctly categorised as part of the town. - The pronunciation I remember from many years ago is /ˈki:fli/ - "gh" as in "enough" et al. But maybe this was due to people not knowing better, or being misled by other people's th-fronting. But I'd think people who don't know better would pronounce it in various ways, including variations in which the "gh" is silent. -- Smjg ( talk) 14:33, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
I was wondering whether when it says that there are 7 mosques in Keighley, are they in normal buildings or have they got the traditional islamic style with the minarets?? it seems like a great place being near Leeds and Bradford. In response to the person posing the questions about the mosques, only two of these mosques are purpose built as far as I know, (the big mosque on Emily Street, formally known as the Markazi Jamia Masjid, and a small, single storey building in Cark Road, called the Ghosiyah Mosque) The five others occupy disused churches and, in the case of a small mosque in East Avenue, a couple of converted terraced houses.

Here goes.... Some may not be wildly happy with this, but I've added a small piece on the gang wars which hit Keighley a few years back and left four local guys dead in only five months. I thought this was a significant (albeit highly unpleasant) enough event in the town's history to warrant a mention. However, I do want to keep some sort of perspective here so I've kept the article very short, put it right at the bottom of the page and I don't think I've sensationalised anything. I've referenced an old Telegrah and Argus article which summarises the conflict quite well. However, it inaccurately dates the Qadir Ahmed murder as July 2002 instead of February 2002, so I've corrected that myself. With respect, I'm not quite sure why you have a problem with this description of the conflict. It involved two different groups of criminals, heavily involved in drug-related activity, who violently competed for territory to allow them to sell their 'goods' - hence the word 'turf'. Four people being murdered in a medium sized town in such a short space of time is enough to qualify for the adjective 'bloody'. And as for the use of the word 'war'. Well the standard figure of speech IS 'turf war'. Crime of this kind happens in towns and cities across the country but there is no need to add this to Wikipedia. Would anyone violently object to a new sub section listing Keighley's neighbourhoods? I've noticed this feature on other detailed Wikipedia profiles of British towns. Keighley may be only a medium sized town but it has quite a diverse range of areas which I thought would be worth listing (it could go under the geography section). If no one has objected to this after about a month I'll get on with it and make the additional entry myself. I've lived in Keighley since 2005 and know the town pretty well.
