Another rumor that I have heard is that the sandwhich was invented by the Lord as a way of feeding his wife with deteriorating health. Any truth to this? —The preceding

I have read somewhere that he was corrupt, and one reason for the British not doing better in our war of independence was that he had been siphoning funds from the navy to his personal accounts. As a result, the ships were in a horrible state of disrepair, and the sailors' foodstuffs and other supplies suffered badly as well.

It was a claim put about by many of his political opponents at the time, but there wasn't a great deal of truth in it. The
Royal Navy actually performed fairly well during the war, and had it not been for victory at sea over French, Dutch and Spanish fleets, the peace terms in 1783 would most likely have been exceedingly harsher. In spite of this, the idea that his corruption led to the British defeat is still occasionally suggested.

Austin Liska
A great article. Only one little note: what or who is that "Austin Liska"? I cannot find anything on the web about it (except some boys named the same), I dunno if it would be a historical name or a place or whatever. Is it an island? The text suggest so. Please...

The Earl's mistress, Martha Ray, is said in the "Personal life" section to have born him "about nine" children.
In the later chronology section she is said to have been the mother of five with him. There is a citation for the "about nine", but nothing for the five.
Obviously needs verification or just correction to the chronology? Help?! --

Date of Birth
Need to clarify DOB, as introduction and infobox has 3 November while chronology has 14 November. — Preceding

I've changed them both to 13 November, in line with his biography.

Thanks, Lord C. Thanks too for your recent development of the article (Sandwich is my 6th great g/father). Hope you dont mind me making a few grammatical tweaks, mostly about use of caps. I now wonder tho if my 'in opposition' is correct as term could imply disagreement on political rather than military matters. Will leave that one to you. All the best.
