Longstreet

I have reverted a lot of chattiness about James Longstreet, for the following reasons:

  1. Longstreet (class of 42) and Hood (class of 53) were not West Point contemporaries.
  2. It is not an encyclopedia style to use frequent nicknames (with only a few exceptions, such as Stonewall Jackson).
  3. The references to friendship are neither cited nor particularly relevant to the article.

Sorry, I just got confused with the relationship between them in the Gettysburg movie. 72.221.69.79 ( talk) 23:14, 7 July 2008 (UTC) reply

Chickamauga

There is considerable confusion regarding Hood's part in the battle of Chickamauga, caused mainly by Longstreet's autobiography, which is quite completely in error on this count, as can be deduced quite easily from the reports presented in volume XXX of the O.R.s. This article is understandably not very clear on that subject either, so here are a few points of attention: - Brig. Gen. Evander Law was in command of the division before, during and after the battle (see, amongst others, the reports of Jerome B. Robertson (Brig. Gen.) and Bushrod Johnson (Brig. Gen. in command of [provisional] division)). - Hood commanded a 'corps' consisting of Longstreet's command plus the divisions of A.P. Stewart, Bushrod Johnson and Hindman, while Longstreet commanded the wing [Hood, Advance and Retreat, 56]. It is not entirely clear what happened to corps-command upon Hood's wounding.

The official records (mainly Vol. XXX part 2) and Hood's letter to Longstreet [Advance and Retreat p. 55-59] provide most of the story, though severe holes in the tale remain. 82.176.216.87 ( talk) 10:54, 3 May 2008 (UTC) reply

edits of December 2

There were a number of edits on December 2 and I corrected a few problems. According to the definition of Fabian strategy, this is not a good characterization of what Johnston was waging -- a war of attrition. (You might argue that Robert E. Lee employed such a strategy in the Overland Campaign.) I also expounded on Hood's attitude about the assaults at Franklin, rather than leaving it as an un-cited reference to "discipline". Hood's Tomb

There was a section down at the bottom that said Hood's tomb was in the movie, but as you can see on findagrave.com, its not. [1] -- Kranar drogin ( talk) 22:12, 28 March 2009 (UTC) reply

Wooden Head

I just reverted an edit and mistakenly omitted the edit summary. "Wooden Head" as a nickname is documented in the footnote. Hal Jespersen ( talk) 01:22, 19 February 2010 (UTC) reply

Dutch ancestry

McMurry's book states that the earliest record of Hood's family is the 1696 marriage of Jasper Hood and Tryntje Andries. McMurry says nothing is known of Jasper, but his wife's family had lived in the NY region for decades. Apparently there's a genealogical book The Tunis Hood Family by Dellmann O. Hood, published in 1960, that makes the Hoods (and Jasper) of Dutch descent. McMurry doesn't appear to cite this book though, so I wonder how reliable we ought to treat this particular genealogical book in regard to the Hood origins. For the early Hoods, McMurry cites W.T. Black's "The Ancestry of John Bell Hood", Kentucky Historical Society Register. 51. pages 305-314, published in 1953. Maybe if someone wants to tackle this article they could check out these sources for themselves.-- Brianann MacAmhlaidh ( talk) 22:03, 20 September 2013 (UTC) reply

Question: Reversion of addition of context for Hood's joining the Confederacy

I recently made an addition to this article that I believe calls out an important and fairly-stated fact about Hood's actions at the outset of the American Civil War. This was reverted without comment by Rjensen.

The addition is not inaccurate as Hood did indeed take up arms against his country in favor of a slaver's rebellion. It provides important context to the reader about the character of the man and the gravity of his fateful choice to join the Confederate cause. If the concern is for the tone of the wording, I welcome input on alternative descriptors for Hood's sedition.
