The name of this page is incorect. The neighborhood is much more commonly known as the upper haight or sometimes the park district which is the police precinct. I don't believe Haight Ashbury is correct for this neighborhood name. Paul E. Ester 14:12, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- If this page shows up when one puts in "94117" into wikipedia's search engine, than it should be named "The Haight". No Ashbury or Upper. 94117 encompasses more than just the area this page is dedicated to. I write this as someone that lives on Divisadero in the Lower Haight. The current name of this page is the cumbersome and contrived, Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, California. Why? Is there a conflict with Haight-Ashbury? Apparently not, since that page redirects directly to here. [[neighorbood, city, state]] is a fine convention for neighborhood names that actually conflict with other names. But why burden the name of the main article for Haight-Ashbury with all this clunkiness? Doing so also violates the Wiki convention for common names.
I think this page should be named Haight-Ashbury and the cumbersome Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, California should remain as a redirect for the 1 in 100,000 users who actually looks it up like that. -- Serge 00:01, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Although most residents of the city probably refer to the neighborhood as the Upper Haight, they would also recognize this designation and — more importantly — the "Haight-Ashbury" name is the one that the trillions of visitors would be looking for. I think we should leave it so someone searching or visiting from Alabama or Albania would be just as likely to find what they were looking for as a resident. And I just checked: the Upper Haight was recently created as a redirect. MrRedwood 18:30, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I live in the Lower Haight. The beginning of the article, as I found it, said that "Upper Haight" refers not to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, but to the area in the hills above. I've never heard anyone give "Upper Haight" this meaning; rather, I always understand people to mean "Haight-Ashbury," especially when distinguishing between my neighborhood and the more famous one up Haight Street. I can imagine, however, that people who live on the hillside might give it this meaning. I've modified the opening paragraph to reflect both meanings for "Upper Haight." Comments? As a longtime San Francisco resident, I haven't heard anyone in the City call this area Haight-Ashbury while speaking for years, almost always hearing The Haight. If we can agree on what this area is called, that would be the appropriate name of the article, with a redirect from Haight-Ashbury. If I want to be completest, I have heard all of: a three-way designation (Lower Haight, The Haight, Upper Haight) and two two-way designation (Lower Haight, The Haight) or (Lower Haight, Upper Haight). San Francisco's newspaper of record, The San Francisco Chronicle, calls the neighborhood covered by the article San Francisco: The Haight, "The Haight", although Haight-Ashbury also turns up on SF Chronicle content. SF Weekly, a free weekly, also uses both, possibly depending on the authors. It's difficult to tell for sure without visiting the individual pages, because the pages might contain comments or include Google maps, which call it Haight-Ashbury. the part about the gap is somewhat misleading. the haight-asbury gap was the first of the chain and was intended for the counterculture--hence the name "gap", as in "generation gap". Therefore, the gap's presence does not represent the neighborhood's "slide into mainstream", but rather the neighborhood as incubator to some commercial trademarks, or something. The same could probably be said about the ben & jerry's.

Agreed, I removed mention completely. All in all this line had been troublesome since the creation of this article.

Yet again I have removed a contributor's inappropriate paragraph on crime/squatting and homelessness. PLEASE: Create a separate section!
As this is not a proper ( and unbiased ) way to finish the overall article. The descriptions of these kids are one sided, all-encompassing and negative. ( they are all begging for drug money. And an unreliable view of what "The City" (?) thinks of them )
Please, respect this article. If you insist on adding this I can only keep erasing it, so please, if you have to add this information, do more research, post it some were else and have some compassion.

The article needs provide a reliable source confirming that the difference in the names Upper Haight vs. Lower Haight comes from elevation and not from street numbers on Haight (higher street numbers vs. lower street numbers). Both causes are possible in San Francisco English. Thisisnotatest ( talk) 22:52, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
There is also a gap between the area call the Upper Haight and the Lower Haight. This article says that Upper starts west of Baker and the Lower article has it going east from Divisidero. That leaves two blocks in neither area. I happen to live in that gap, and have lived here for over 20 years. I've yet to find a definitive demarcation between the two neihborhoods. I think many of us between Scott and Masonic don't consider ourselves part of either since we are between the two commercial areas of the Haight. I've heard names like "Lower Buena Vista", "Middle Haight", and my favorite, "DMV Heights". -- ☑ Sam uelWantman 06:42, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
