The city of Guanajuato is the capital of the state of the same name. It is located at 21.02°N 101.28°W, 370 km (230 miles) northwest of Mexico City, at an elevation of 1'996.44 meters (6,550 ft) above sea level. The estimated population in 2003 was about 78,000 people.

Guanajuato was founded as a town in 1554 and received the designation as a city in 1741. The city is well known for its wealth of fine colonial era Spanish architecture.

In the Panteon catacombs to the west of the city is a famous burial ground noted for the natural mummies produced by the conditions there.

The city of Guanajuato was the birthplace of artist Diego Rivera.

The city it is also sit of one of the largest places where mathematic boils in a public institution called CIMAT.

Each October the city holds the Cervantino, a festival of the arts named after Miguel de Cervantes.

I don't know who wrote that the cemetary tax was repealed and no new mummies have been added but this is false, this october 2 corpses were added due to not paying the tax. Fixed it!

as a side note, sounds like a weird place

It is a weird place, but amazingly cool. One of my favorite places in the world---the town, not the Mummy Mueseum, which I found ghoulish. But, the museum is always full of tourists, and not gringos---tourists from other parts of Mexico. -- VonWoland 05:24, 30 March 2006 (UTC) reply

Medieval festival

There are walks in the city at night through the callejones, small subterranean streets, where college students play medieval instruments. Twice a year the city has a medieval festival, [1] one during Holy week in March, and the other in mid-December. A medieval fair is organized in the city centre with parades, and Spanish medieval food and music. People dress according to the fashion of that era, and the city is decorated as a village in medieval Spain. The colonial architecture of the city gives the festival an authentic backdrop.

Good catch but some of the information should be salvaged (by someone more familiar with the topic than I am). There is a Medieval Festival in Guanajuato; I have attended it. Medieval music is played using what appear to be period instruments. At any time (not just during the festival) organized groups of musicians known as La Tuna may be found playing in the streets or elsewhere. La Tuna has its origins in college life in Spain, although many members are obviously older, both in Spain and in Mexico. Guanajuato is considered a center of folk music and "musica romantica."
"Callejones" are above-ground alleys, not below-ground, but there are many beautiful alleys in Guanajuato; the author whose material was deleted may have been confusing the alleys with the underground roads (which are for automobiles). 71.194.38.54 ( talk) 08:26, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Larry Siegel reply

Transportation

Neat article about the sights and history of Gto. municipality, but what about infrastructure issues? Buses, rail, etc. But also, where does one fly into? Say you're a rally fan and want to the the WRC rally in town. I'm sure Gto. has an airport, but where is it and what airlines fly through there? First, since 1997, the only passenger trains in Mexico are the ones in Copper Canyon. I suspect that it has been much longer since the last passenger train left Guanajuato. There's an old train station, but there's no tracks anywhere near it.
The nearest airport is already in Wikipedia: Del Bajío International Airport.
