I was employed by "The Government of the District of Columbia" for 20 years, and that was always the official name, so I know of no reason why the WP article should have any other title. Although everyone refers to them as if they are the same the City of Washington is not legally the same entity as the District of Columbia. FriendlyFred ( talk) 05:42, 27 July 2014 (UTC) reply

I don't know. This article simply uses the standard article naming scheme used on Wikipedia for US states and territories: "[topic] of Washington, D.C.". Provide some reliable sources and maybe we can change this. Int21h ( talk) 22:34, 27 July 2014 (UTC) reply
The USA.gov portal uses "Government of the District of Columbia" in recognition that the District is the legal entity being governed, not the city of Washington. The dc.gov site refers to the District of Columbia as the legal entity also, but often uses the shorthand version "District Government" or "DC Government" but not "Washington". The surest way to distinguish a local from a visitor is that the former will only say "DC" while the latter will commit the error of saying "Washington". Also, D.C. is rarely used by locals, DC is the abbreviation that recognizes the District as having the same status as a state, equal to MD or VA. FriendlyFred ( talk) 02:14, 29 July 2014 (UTC) reply
OK. I have made a request to rename the article as Government of the District of Columbia. (This requires an administrator's involvement.) Thank you for bringing this up. Int21h ( talk) 03:30, 29 July 2014 (UTC) Int21h ( talk) 03:35, 29 July 2014 (UTC) reply
  • Thanks, this has been a nice example of WP efficiency. Just the facts. FriendlyFred ( talk) 22:47, 29 July 2014 (UTC) reply
