West Bay

Well, first of all this article is about the Bay Area, not the bay.
Beyond that, though, there was a lot of discussion regarding what areas should and should not be covered. Unfortunately there is no precise definition that is widely agreed upon. In my view the term "Bay Area" is generally not used to refer to the areas that are on or right close to the coast. That strikes Bolivar and Galveston obviously. Certainly West Bay and Christmas Bay are considered part of the estuary system. But that part of the estuary extends very far away from the main body of the estuary. My attitude was that we have to draw the line somewhere so I declined to include those areas far beyond the bend at Texas City (most of that is sparsely populated anyway).
Other than excluding Galveston, Bolivar, and central Houston I did not explicitly exclude any other areas. I simply declined to mention some of these other areas focusing primarily on the areas around Galveston Bay proper and Trinity Bay (the one exception is that I did mention Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge which is a major area preserve even if it is pushing the envelope of this definition).

My thought is that the simplest solution would be best. "Bay Area" should be used to refer to all of the locations around the geographic area that is Galveston Bay. This is the format followed for other areas. Within that entry, there could be a discussion of the local usage of "Bay Area." AusJeb ( talk) 19:36, 28 January 2010 (UTC) reply

Actually what the article has now was specifically chosen as a "simplest is the best" solution. There was more than one person who argued for a more restricted definition. Frankly "locations around the geographic area that is Galveston Bay" can be interpreted a lot of ways anyway. I think what we have is very reasonable without getting ridiculous or pointless. If we extend the definition too far then at some point we are just jerrymandering around the city of Houston. -- Mcorazao ( talk) 04:23, 29 January 2010 (UTC) reply

Scope

The article currently seems to be overly long and filled with extraneous information that might better be linked to under articles for individual communities around the Bay (i.e. schools). AusJeb ( talk) 00:07, 23 January 2010 (UTC) reply

Can you be more specific? As some points of comparison, look at Minneapolis – Saint Paul and San Francisco Bay Area. They are similarly detailed. Certainly the level of detail in this article is not more than Houston.
You mention schools. The discussion on schools is pretty short. I intentionally tried to keep it too the basics reserving more detailed discussions for the individual communities.
One thing to consider is that this article is intentionally discussing the collection of communities somewhat as though they were neighborhoods in a larger city. My attitude as I expanded this article was that the Bay Area is composed of lots of smaller communities. Baytown and Pasadena are nontrivial in size although even at that they are not much larger than some neighborhoods of major cities. So my attitude was to try to collect the information on all of these different communities, particularly to the extent that there is a lot of overlap and interaction, and try to present a complete picture of the area in the same way that one would present the information for a major city. Consider if we stripped out most of the details out of the Houston article arguing that those details are better discussed in articles on each separate neighborhood, school district, or what have you. The argument has merit but, practically speaking, it would be much harder for the reader to get a picture of what the whole city is like. Similarly this article is intended to give a "complete" picture of the Bay Area rather than just giving a superficial desciption with a bunch of links.

I just made myself a little bit of liar. Your comment about schools made me investigate the TEA school rankings for the districts. The cross-section of districts in the area presented an interesting picture so I went ahead and added the info making this section a tad longer. I would argue that, since there is no other place in WP where this kind of cross-section of these areas would be presented it is appropriate to include this here. -- Mcorazao ( talk) 19:48, 23 January 2010 (UTC) reply
