Fort Yuma

In this article it says the origional fort was on the Arizona side of the river, then it was rebuilt in the 1850s on the California side. Since the fort was held by the Confederates at the beginning of the U.S. civil war, doesn't that mean the Confederates occupied a portion of California. -- Aj4444 ( talk) 04:14, 30 July 2009 (UTC) reply

As indicated in this article by the California Military Museum, [1] it was the New Mexico territory that was held by the CSA, and not Fort Yuma itself. Maybe this needs to be better worded. Rather The California Column started from the fort itself, on the California side of the river. -- RightCowLeftCoast ( talk) 12:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC) reply

Confederate Fort Yuma

Was there really a fort established by the Confederates? I heard rumors that some Irish rebels built a fort there after the Union Army left the area. However, there seems to be no indication that the Union ever left Fort Yuma during the Civil War. The garrison had been suspecting a rebel attack at the fort for quite some time before the California Column made their advance. Fort Yuma was considered the key to California, and if the rebels captured it, California would fall. That is why it was considered a very important outpost and could not be abandoned. Also, I have done much research about this period and other than on wiki, I have found no other source saying that the Confederates established a base there. The small town of Arizona City, Arizona existed opposite of Fort Yuma, perhaps there were Confederate sympathizers there and maybe that is where this thing originated from. Someone has provided a source for the Confederate Fort Yuma claim though I have just finished looking over it and it says nothing about Irish rebels at a Fort Yuma in Arizona. Until reliable sources can be found, if there is any, the information regarding the Confederate fort should be deleted. I will wait a little while for a response before I make changes.-- $1LENCE D00600D ( talk) 00:07, 1 November 2010 (UTC) reply
