isnt the picking up nickels comment about statistical arbitrage?
It's a more general comment, really, about any attempt to profit from small market inefficiencies, which puts you at risk of being swamped by unexpected larger changes. I've heard it used to criticize technical-analysis-based trading on currency-exchange markets, for example. --
