Inofficial?

Unofficial district? I'm pretty sure its official. -- Eric 23:39, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The degree to which L.A. city neighborhoods are officialy recognized is a major topic in its own right. But it is sufficient for this article to say, as is usual for similar areas, that it is a neighborhood of Los Angeles, and leave the "official/unofficial"-part out of the article. - Willmcw 00:49, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

More demographic info?

Encino is known for being an overwhelmingly white, upper-middle or upper-class neighborhood (north and south of Ventura, respectively). Is it heavily Jewish like Sherman Oaks and Studio City, as well? Is there anywhere I could go to find this out--the L.A. Almanac, maybe? -- Slightlyslack 02:18, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

As a matter of fact, Encino has a large Jewish community but I cannot be sure what is the percentage of Encino residents who are practicing Judaism or self-classify themselves Jewish. Encino within the city of L.A. with Jewish majority sections does extend from Woodland Hills, Los Angeles to Reseda, Los Angeles to Toluca Lake, Los Angeles ranked in the top ten Jewish communities in California, including the Sou-Cal suburbs of Altadena, Calabasas, La Crescenta, Oak Park and West Hollywood. Other ethnic groups known to be numerous in Encino are Arab, Armenian, Iranian, Italian, Russian and Turkish. I suppose the traditional White Anglo Saxon Protestant ethno-nationalities of English, Irish and German are well-represented, but the Jewish population is multinational with Russians and Polish at the top. + 71.102.12.55 ( talk) 08:12, 9 December 2010 (UTC) reply

Richard Pryor's death

People are taken to Encino hospital and die there every day. Given the high concentration of notable show business figures in the area, some of them will die there. We can't list them all. It's beyond trivial. Crunch 14:12, 21 January 2006 (UTC) reply

That section is just a jumble of celebrity tidbits. It would also be interesting to note how Encino was displayed in the 1992 movie "Encino Man". Thanks, Maikel ( talk) 09:07, 8 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Encino Valley?

Is there something called Encino Valley there? In the article it says Encino is in the San Fernando Valley. In a German Wikipedia article it says that someone grew up in Encino Valley. Is that nonsense? Or is the part of San Fernando Valley where Encino is located sometimes called Encino Valley? Please someone clarify!-- Sylvia Anna ( talk) 16:42, 24 May 2009 (UTC) reply

Yes, Encino is in the San Fernando Valley, and yes, "Encino Valley" is nonsense. There are no geographical features that would make the modern district or the historical rancho a separate valley. Encino is a squarish plot smack in the middle of the southern side of the San Fernando valley ~ Ningauble ( talk) 23:22, 24 May 2009 (UTC) reply

The following are individuals who were in the "notable residents" section. They need citations indicating they live (or lived) in Encino.

Alphabetizing Notable People Section

I wondered why this section is alphabetized by the first name of each person, rather than the stand practice of alphabetizing by a person's last name? I did not want to change it because I was unclear why it was done this way, and I wondered if there was a Wikipedia guideline addressing this? Thanks!-- Fraulein451 ( talk) 23:18, 6 December 2012 (UTC) reply

Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area

The article states that this is in Encino, but the reality is more complicated. As of the 2007 redrawing of the boundaries of Lake Balboa, everything east of Burbank Blvd. and north of the Los Angeles River is now in Lake Balboa. That leaves the Balboa and Hjelte sports centers, the Encino and Balboa golf courses, and the Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex in Encino, as well as the office and mailing address (but not the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area sign, which is across the street in Lake Balboa). The Anthony Beilenson park/Lake Balboa, Woodley Lakes Golf Course, and Woodley Park, including the cricket and model airplane fields, are all in Lake Balboa. Chuck Entz ( talk) 04:14, 24 January 2016 (UTC) reply

The situation is indeed confused. Current maps of these neighborhoods on the official website of the City of Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, both prepared in 2013, are themselves inconsistent. Encino-Neighborhood-Council-Map clearly shows shows the recreation area is in Encino, and Lake-Balboa-Neighborhood-Council-Map shows just as clearly that it is in Lake Balboa. Go figure!

As a practical matter, I think the L A Times had it about right in this map, treating the Sepulveda Basin as a separate, unpopulated area in between the surrounding neighborhoods. ~ Ningauble ( talk) 16:50, 13 August 2016 (UTC) reply

The discrepancies should be noted in the article, with the sources. BeenAroundAWhile ( talk) 05:56, 15 August 2016 (UTC) reply
Searching for sources to explain the overlap, I found this in a report prepared the same year as the above linked council maps:

The Basin is of particular interest not only because it is located outside of the Lake Balboa neighborhood boundaries, but also because it is the only area that the Lake Balboa NC shares with another Neighborhood Council, the Encino NC. The two NC’s share the Sepulveda Basin due to potential stakeholder interest. It is hoped that this will encourage stakeholder involvement from both of these communities.

—  "Lake Balboa Neighborhood Profile", Sarah Chandlee et al., Fall 2013, empowerla.org (City of Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment), p. 10.
Note also that http://www.lakebalboanc.org/about-us/boundaries/ (which is out of date because it still includes the Van Nuys airport and areas east of it) draws a distinction between "the Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council boundaries" in blue, and "the area that the Lake Balboa NC shares with Encino NC" in green.

So it appears that the overlap is intentional. For purposes of the city's Neighborhood Councils, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area pertains to the interests of stakeholders who live and do business in both Encino and Lake Balboa. ~ Ningauble ( talk) 20:57, 15 August 2016 (UTC) reply

Boundary differences

The boundaries for Encino on Google Maps [1] are different than the 'Mapping LA' sourced ones in the article. Should these differences be noted, and is it possible to do so without breaking copyright?

[If the link breaks in the future for some reason]: Description of current (Dec. 1, 2022) Google Maps boundaries as well as I can: Northern Boundary: Victory Blvd. from Lindsay Ave. to Balboa Road. East of Balboa, the boundary is the L.A River until the I-405. The 405 makes up the eastern boundary from the L.A River in the north to Ventura Blvd. in the south. The boundary goes along Ventura Blvd. west for about one block before it goes south on Firmament Ave. When it intersects with Valley Vista Blvd, it goes east for about a block until it hits Sherman Oaks Ave. It follows it southwest for a bit until it intersects with Sepulveda Blvd, when it starts to follow it SW. It follows it until it intersects with Mulholland Dr. and starts going west along that road. It continues to follow Mulholland west after it turns into a trail. It then follows Caballero Canyon Trail north after its intersection. It eventually cuts east near the trailhead on Reseda Blvd. It travels north between Hilton Head Way on the west and Lake Encino Drive on the east. It continues north to the east of Karen Drive until it hits Lindsay Ave. and follows that north until the origin intersection. BhamBoi ( talk) 23:02, 1 December 2022 (UTC) reply
