May I know why was this page moved from Des Voeux Road to Des Vœux Road? As far as I know (and speaking as a Hongkong resident) the road name has long been anglicised, and nowadays all road signs and addresses would spell it as Des Voeux Road Central or Des Voeux Road West rather than Des Vœux Road Central or Des Vœux Road West. Remember wikipedia is descriptive, not prescriptive. -- Pkchan 09:01, 7 February 2006 (UTC) reply

I agree. I don't think the ligature in the road name is even "seldom used", it's probably never used. -- KittySaturn 09:17, 7 February 2006 (UTC) reply
If that was the wrong thing to do, move it back, my apologies. There were dozens of redirects and double redirects pointing at variations of DVR Central, DVR West, etc, but the actual article was here. In repairing that, I also took heed of the opening sentence that it was Des Vœux and moved it, assuming it was named before Wikipedia allowed Unicode in names. Note I also did the same (moving around redirects and fixing double and triple redirects in articles) at Canal Road, Queen's Road, and others. I also created a Des Vœux disambiguation page from the man to the road, with redirects at the anglicized version. (actually, I wouldn't call it anglicized, the gentleman was english, and he used the ligature, maybe modernized) SchmuckyTheCat 15:43, 7 February 2006 (UTC) reply
I see. I'll move it back then.
Regarding the gentleman, I am not sure -- yes he was an Englishman but the guy was born in Germany and was of French descent! -- so it is equally likely that he actually used the name Des Vœux during his lifetime (and it got anglicised by the colony governments to avoid trouble in printing), and that his family had already anglicised the name before his birth. But I think Des Voeux would be a better bet -- at least, Hongkong government's records predominantly refer to him as Des Voeux and not Des Vœux. With your kind consent I'll proceed to move the other pages back to Des Voeux as well, thank you. -- Pkchan 15:53, 7 February 2006 (UTC) reply
Have made changes to pages linked to Des Vœux Road to point back to, as the case may be, Des Voeux Road, Des Voeux Road Central or Des Voeux Road West -- links to the actual roads (which as of to date redirect to Des Voeux Road) are used so that Special:Whatlinkshere/Des Voeux Road Central and Special:Whatlinkshere/Des Voeux Road West would become meaningful.
I have refrained from moving/renaming/re-linking entries concerning Des Vœux, the man himself, since at least one credible source (the Canadabio one, at the External Links section of that article) spells it as "Des Vœux" rather than "Des Voeux". I'd say that both spellings are contentious as of this moment; but let's keep things as they are now until we have more convincing evidence which suggests the right spelling to be one way or another. -- Pkchan 16:08, 8 February 2006 (UTC) reply
Pre-war maps were mostly printed with œ. — Insta ntnood 18:31, 19 February 2006 (UTC) reply
Thanks for the additional info. I have recovered description on this at the article. Citation of source would be most welcome. -- Pkchan 15:32, 20 February 2006 (UTC) reply
I wish I owned the maps.. I'd better bring a notebook and jot down the info of the maps next time. :-) — Insta ntnood 19:18, 20 February 2006 (UTC) reply

This item says it is still a stub. But it seems quite a complete and useful item. Shouldn't we remove that note? Martin, 28 Mar 06
